SC refuses to interfere with AIADMK resolution expelling OPS, his aides

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to interfere with a Madras High Court order rejecting pleas of O Panneerselvam and his supporters against the AIADMK general council resolution expelling them from the party. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta told senior advocate K K Venugopal and other senior counsel appearing for Panneerselvam and his supporters that it is not inclined to interfere with the high court order. The bench said interfering with the resolution would amount to allowing the suit pending before the civil court. "If we interfere at this juncture, it will create huge chaos. To us it appears, there is a split, it will work itself out. Sometimes, it's better to let things work themselves out. Sorry, we are not inclined to interfere with the high court order," the bench said. AIADMK chief Palaniswami slams ruling DMK govt over Cauvery water issue

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday lashed out at the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery river dispute and wondered if Chief Minister M K Stalin was concerned about the people of the state on the matter. The leader of opposition in the state assembly alleged that the DMK was "backing" the Congress government in Karnataka "with a view to ensure the businesses run by its family members" there should not be affected. The AIADMK general secretary also charged "puppet CM Stalin" with lacking any foresight, saying he released water from the Mettur Dam in Salem on June 12. Believing in the government's assurance, about 1.50 lakh farmers in the Cauvery delta region took up short-term 'kuruvai' crop over 5 lakh acres of land. But now, crops on 3.50 lakh acres have withered and the rest were being taken up with well-water irrigation, Palaniswami said in a statement here. "What should have the DMK government, which lacks efficient administration, done. It should have reduced

Sasikala opposes power tariff hike in TN, says it will affect people

Expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala lambasted the DMK government in the state over the revised power tariff, which came into effect recently, saying it will affect all sections of the people. Sasikala was addressing a meeting after arriving here on Tuesday night to a warm reception by a section of AMMK and AIADMK volunteers. She demanded that the state government roll back the electricity tariff revision. In July, Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji announced a hike in the tariff for TANGEDCO consumers, proposing an increase of Rs 27.5 (per month) for those using up to 200 units and 65 paise per unit hike for railways and educational institutions. Sasikala, the former aide of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, also stressed on the importance of strengthening the AIADMK to capture power in Tamil Nadu. "To combat the DMK and to capture power in Tamil Nadu, I will work hard to strengthen the AIADMK," she said.
