Migrants stranded in Mexico try to restart life after Trump crackdown

Margelis Rodriguez and her two children took selfies on their flight to Tijuana, showing off the T-shirts she had custom-made to mark what she expected to be her family's life-changing moment. On the back of the shirts were their names and the flags of the six countries they passed through in 2024. On the front between the flags of her native Venezuela and the United States, was written in Spanish: "Yes it was possible, thank God. The wait was worth it. I made it!!" The celebratory words now sting driving home how close they came without making it and how precarious their lives are with their future more uncertain than ever, Rodriguez said while standing near the tent her family lives in at a shelter in Tijuana, a block from the towering wall marking the US border. The family is among tens of thousands of people who had appointments into February, many of them left stranded in Mexican border cities after President Donald Trump took office. Judge set to rule on Justice dept's demand for Musk's access to Treasury

A federal judge is likely to quickly decide whether to grant Justice Department demands that Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency be allowed to immediately resume accessing Treasury Department records containing personal data for millions of Americans. Judge Jeannette A Vargas had ordered lawyers to meet and confer over any changes needed to an order issued early Saturday by another Manhattan judge that banned Musk's team from accessing the records and to file written arguments if an agreement was not reached. If unchanged, the order will remain in effect until a Friday hearing. Lawyers resumed filing their arguments late Monday, leaving it to the judge to rule on the federal government's request that access to the records be immediately restored on the grounds that it was unconstitutional to block Musk's work. Vargas required both sides to complete submissions in time for her to rule as early as Tuesday. On Friday, 19 Democratic attorneys general, including New York ...

Trump steps up his 2018 tariffs on steel and aluminum, risks inflation

President Donald Trump on Monday removed the exceptions and exemptions from his 2018 tariffs on steel, meaning that all steel imports will be taxed at a minimum of 25%. Trump also hiked his 2018 aluminum tariffs to 25% from 10%. We were being pummeled by both friend and foe alike, Trump said as he signed two proclamations changing his orders during his first term that go into effect on March 4. It's time for our great industries to come back to America. The moves are part of an aggressive push by the president to reset global trade, with Trump saying that tax hikes on the people and companies buying foreign-made products will ultimately strengthen domestic manufacturing. But the tariffs would hit allies as the four biggest sources of steel imports are Canada, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Trump also intends this week to reset US taxes on all imports to match the same levels charged by other countries. All of that comes on top of

US officials to meet Zelenskyy in Munich for talks on Russia-Ukraine war

President Donald Trump' s senior advisers are expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference to discuss the path toward ending Russia's nearly three-year war in Ukraine. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, told The Associated Press that the White House is ironing out details of the highly anticipated talks during the annual summit for international security discussions. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Kellogg are among the Trump administration officials traveling to Germany for the summit, and all could be involved in the critical talks with Zelenskyy and his team on the sidelines of the event. Knowing how the process works, it would probably be better for Zelenskyy if we all met together and talked through it as a group, Kellogg said in an interview. Trump on Monday said he'd probably speak with Zelenskyy this week. The U.S. president sa

With Trump in office, Iranians mark anniversary of 1979 Islamic Revolution

Tens of thousands of Iranians marked the anniversary of the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, the first such rally since President Donald Trump returned to the White House and restarted his maximum pressure campaign targeting Tehran. The annual commemoration of the end of the rule of the American-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the creation of Iran's Shiite theocracy comes this year as deep uncertainty lingers across the country. Iran faces crushing sanctions wrecking its economy and the threat of more coming from Trump, even as the American president suggests he wants to reach a deal with Tehran over its rapidly advancing nuclear program. Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday criticised proposed talks with the United States and described negotiations with America as "not intelligent, wise or honourable. Khamenei also suggested that there should be no negotiations with such a government, though stopped short of issuing a direct order not to engage

Vance, Musk question authority of courts as Trump's agenda faces pushback

Top Trump administration officials are openly questioning the judiciary's authority to serve as a check on executive power as the new president's sweeping agenda faces growing pushback from the courts. Over the past 24 hours, officials ranging from billionaire Elon Musk to Vice President JD Vance have not only criticized a federal judge's decision early Saturday that blocks Musk's Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department records, but have also attacked the legitimacy of judicial oversight, a fundamental pillar of American democracy, which is based on the separation of powers. If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal. If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that's also illegal. Judges aren't allowed to control the executive's legitimate power, Vance wrote on X on Sunday morning. That post came hours after Musk said overnight that the judge who rule
