West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday lambasted the Left parties for their supporters alleged attack on vehicles ferrying school children during the two-day nationwide strike called by central trade unions. A South African primary school teacher was suspended on Thursday after a photograph appeared to show black children sitting separately from white children in a classroom, sparking a storm of racism accusations. The pupils were attending their first day at the Schweizer-Reneke school in North West province when the teacher took a photograph to send to anxious parents. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday reiterated his government's commitment to improve the education sector and said the Centre has sanctioned seven new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) for the state because of continuous efforts of his administration. Speaking at a function at Yingkiong in Upper Siang district, Khandu said the new KVs would come up at Kurung Kumey, Dibang Valley, Namsai, Upper Subansiri, Anjaw, West Siang and Upper Siang districts of the state soon. The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will launch a six-month Artificial Intelligence (AI) course at three centres in the country, a top official of the institute said Thursday. IIT-KGP, Director, Partha Pratim Chakrabarti told a press meet here that the certified programme is aimed at strengthening India's talent pool in Machine Learning and AI. Chakrabarti said the courses, which will begin from March this year will be offered at IIT KGP's Kolkata facility, at IIT KGP's Kharagpur campus and at a rented premise at Bengaluru. An Education department official was arrested here on Thursday by Vigilance sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a woman teacher for payment of salary. According to Deputy SP (Vigilance), Gopal Paswan, a complaint had been received from Shagufta Naz Fatmi, who taught at a government school in the district that she had not received her salary for about a couple of years and Block Education Officer, Sono, Rama Shankar Sahu had demanded a bribe to release her payments. "A trap was accordingly laid and Sahu was arrested while accepting the bribe at his residence. After interrogation he will be produced before the designated court in Patna before being sent to jail", Paswan told reporters.

Delhi University teachers staged a protest outside the vice-chancellor's office on Wednesday over the demand of absorption of ad-hoc teachers in the varsity. "To express the collective anger at the failure of the government and the vice-chancellor to resolve their long-standing demands, thousands of teachers turned up in large numbers outside the gate number 1 of V-C office on Wednesday," Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) president Rajib Ray said. Students of two state-run universities and over 15 colleges across Assam decided on Wednesday to boycott their classes indefinitely to protest against the passage of the citizenship bill in the Lok Sabha. The Dibrugarh University students' union also banned the entry of any member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party into the campus. The student bodies at Tezpur University, Jorhat Medical College, Pub Kamrup College, JB College, DCB College and others have held protests in their campuses, although no decision to boycott classes has been taken. Students seeking admission in colleges will be able to skip the physical verification process from the next academic session as the entire exercise will be carried out online, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has said. Going by reports of irregularities in the admission process last year, all vice-chancellors (VC) and registrars of universities have been asked to take e-route for filling up forms, document verification and fee payments, the minister told reporters Tuesday. "Some stray incidents of irregularities in certain colleges have caused concern among the students and the parents. The government does not want a repeat of last year's experience," Chatterjee asserted. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader also said that the VCs have been asked to ensure that the process passes of smoothly, with each educational institution choosing a specific bank for its transactions. St Xavier's College in Kolkata will start a finance laboratory over the next six months to help students undertake research in finance and accounting, college Principal Rev Fr (Dr) Dominic Savio said Tuesday. All major databases in finance and accounting will be available in the lab, the first-of-its kind in the country, he said. St Xavier's College in Kolkata is the second oldest Jesuit institution in India, founded in 1860. "There will be a state-of-the-art centre, housed in a room in the college campus, which will serve as the finance lab," he said. As many as 110 people registered themselves for the free Hindi classes started by the embassy, it said in a statement. In addition to people of Indian-origin and American nationals, students include citizens from the UK, Germany, Brazil, Oman, Ukraine, Belarus and Bangladesh among others, it said. Following an overwhelming response, the students are now divided into two class and are taught twice a week.
