College staff associations extend support to DUTA strike
The staff association of several colleges in the Delhi University extended support to the shutdown call given by the DUTA, teachers said Tuesday. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) called for a two-day university shutdown against the administration's alleged ignorance towards the pending promotions and non-involvement of the elected representatives in major decisions. The protesters will stage a dharna outside the Vice-Chancellor's Office on Wednesday. JNUSU observes strike in solidarity with trade unions
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) Tuesday began their two-day strike in solidarity with the nationwide strike called by central trade unions. The JNUSU said their strike was successful on day one despite an email by the JNU registrar to all students calling the JNUSU a group of "self-proclaimed leaders". Students rallied behind the union to ensure that the strike, which is also against a series of assaults by the administration on campus in the past three years, was a successful one, the JNUSU claimed. Students participated in the strike successfully, showing solidarity with workers and against the vice-chancellor's "lies and financial corruption", it added. The JNUSU is yet to be notified, with the administration saying proper bills of election expenditures are yet to be submitted.
DGCA approves Aeronautics & Aircraft Maintenance engineering course in Jamia
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted approval to Pawan Hans Limited to run a course in Aeronautics and Aircraft Maintenance engineering at the Jamia Millia Islamia, the varsity said Tuesday. The DGCA granted CAR-147(Basic) approval under B1.3(Helicopter-Turbine) and B2 (Avionics) category to Pawan Hans Limited to run the B.Sc Aeronautics and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course at the varsity, they said. The CAR-147 (Basic) or B.Sc (Aeronautics) programme is a joint venture of Pawan Hans Limited and the varsity set up through a memorandum of understanding signed on July 27, 2017. A training organisation has been established with an objective to provide a world class quality education and practical training in aviation at par with latest technology enabling students competent for taking modules examination as per CAR 66 requirements, in order to acquire DGCA License (AME license in Mechanical/Avionics stream), the varsity added. Inform students about attendance norms during admission,
West Bengal government Tuesday asked vice-chancellors of various universities of the state to properly inform students about the minimum attendance needed under Choice Based Credit System for appearing for semester examinations. "I have asked the VCs to ensure that the students (of universities and affiliated colleges) are alerted in no uncertain terms that attendance is essential from the day of admission," Education minister Partha Chatterjee said. He was briefing reporters on deliberations at a meeting attended by VCs and registrars of state-run universities. Referring to the agitation by a section of students over the issue in some colleges recently, Chatterjee said the agitators had claimed about not being properly intimated about the attendance requirement by their institute beforehand. Asked if the VCs were asked to lower the minimum number of attendance from 60 per cent, Chatterjee said, "No way. The minimum attendance figure will not be decreased." The minister .
Punjab seeks Canada's cooperation for animal husbandry sector
The Punjab government Tuesday sought Canada's cooperation for the development of animal husbandry sector in the state. Punjab Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu Tuesday met the Consulate General of Canada Mia Yen and Canada Trade Commissioner Gurbans Sobti, an official release said. Besides exchange of animals of high breeds, the state government is keen to adopt state-of-the-art technologies in the animal husbandry sector, the minister said. Hyderabad Central University (HCU) students have demanded the reinstatement of 'Velivada,' a temporary structure with portraits of anti-caste icons, on the campus.The students have also said that their protest will continue if HCU Vice Chancellor Dr Appa Rao is not removed from the post and arrested.'Velivada' was put up on the campus when Rohith Vemula and his friends were evacuated from their hostel in 2016. St Xavier's College in Kolkata will set up a finance laboratory over the next six months to help students undertake research in economics and accounting, Principal Rev Fr (Dr) Dominic Savio said Tuesday. Man attacks children with hammer in Chinese primary school; 20 injured
A disgruntled former worker of a Beijing primary school armed with a hammer attacked and injured 20 children, three of them seriously, officials said Tuesday, the latest such incident in China. The attack at the Number One Primary School in Beijing's Xicheng district took place just around noon, media reports said. HC seeks Delhi govt response on plea to implement 7th pay commission in pvt school
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought response of the city government on a plea by 89 employees, including teachers, of a private school here, seeking implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations. Justice Suresh Kait also sought reply of DAV College Managing Committee and DAV Public School, Rohini, on the petition filed by the employees, including teachers, instructors, librarians and maids, seeking payment of revised allowance and other benefits as per the 7th Pay Commission with effect from January 1, 2016. The court listed the matter for further hearing on April 23. The petition, filed through advocates Ashok Agarwal and Kumar Utkarsh, sought directions to the school to pay the employees allowances and other benefits including arrears of Dearness Allowance in terms of 6th Pay Commission with effect from January 1, 2006 and all the consequential benefits thereof on a par with their counterparts in schools of Delhi government. Class 12 results: Students of govt-run schools in Kashmir bag top positions, girls outshine boys
Students from government-run schools in Kashmir have bagged most of the top positions after the Class 12 results were announced, an official said Tuesday. He said 52 per cent of the nearly 70,000 students have passed the examination, the results of which were announced Monday night. Girls (54 per cent) outshone boys by a margin of 4 per cent. "Students of government schools have again come out with flying colours in the Higher Secondary Part-II examinations in Kashmir division bagging top positions," the official spokesman said. Man attacks children in Chinese primary school; 20 injured
A man in China attacked children inside a Beijing primary school, injuring 20 of them, state media reported Tuesday. The attacker, whose motive was not immediately known, has been arrested, CGTN news channel reported. The condition of three of the children is said to be critical. All injured have been hospitalised. The incident took place around 11:17 AM (local time) at the elementary school in central Beijing's Xicheng district. In January 2017, a farmer slashed and injured 12 children with a knife at a kindergarten in Youyi town, Pingxiang city. Four children were seriously injured while eight others received minor injuries. The man has been executed.
