UP govt gears up to check cheating in state board exams

A new software has been designed and a four-step process initiated to check the menace of copying in the Uttar Pradesh board exams which are beginning from February 7, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said. Centres in the state, which reported maximum cases of cheating in the past, will be strictly monitored, he said. "The intention of the UP government is to curtail use of unfair means by students while making efforts to improve quality of education. Owing to efforts of the UP government, use of unfair means has stopped, and the number of students studying in government schools has increased by 18-20 per cent," Sharma, who also holds the portfolio of secondary and higher education, told PTI here in an interview. He said the UP Board exam will begin on February 7, and will be conducted in the next 16 working days. Shi Yomi becomes 23rd district of Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh got its 23rd district on Sunday with the formal inauguration of Shi Yomi, carved out of the West Siang district, officials said. Two more districts would be created, which would increase the total number of districts to 25, they said. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mechuka read out the notification for creation of Shi Yomi district in presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, an official release said. "The district, consisting of four circles -- Mechuka, Pidi, Tato and Monigong -- was carved out of West Siang district," Khandu said. Owing to its large geographical area, inaccessible terrains and the district headquarters Aalo being far from these four circles, the state assembly gave its nod to the creation of the new district, he said. CCCC 2018: Finale of national level inter-school crossword contest to begin Monday

The finale of the sixth edition of national level inter-school CCCC Cryptic Crossword Contest will begin Monday in Kendriya Vidyalaya number two at Delhi Cantt here. The three-day finale would go on till December 12 and over 40 school teams, who had won their respective preliminary city rounds held between July and September across the country, would participate in it. "The contest that began in 2013 is a two-stage event. In the first, school teams participate in an hour-long written test in city rounds across the country. In the second, the winning school teams from various city rounds gather at the national capital to decide the national winner," Amitabh Ranjan, chief operating officer of Patna-based organisation Extra-C which conduct the contest, said in a release. The contest is open to students of Class 9 to 12 in all the schools affiliated to any boards in the country, it said.

SAC approves decision to streamline J-K's teaching cadre

In a decision aimed at streamlining the teaching cadre in Jammu and Kashmir, the governor administration Sunday approved the action plan recommended by a committee set up three months ago, an official spokesperson said. The committee, constituted on August 13, was mandated to devise a comprehensive strategy to review issues of all school teachers in the school education department, including those funded under the ongoing centrally-sponsored scheme 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' and suggest possible solutions. The State Administrative Council (SAC) met under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik here, considered the departmental proposal based on the recommendations of the committee and broadly accepted the action plan proposed by the committee, the spokesperson said. He said the decision would enable streamlining the cadre of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers by transitioning them in the regular cadre of teachers and meeting the salary deficit of SSA and RMSA teachers, which is over Rs .

Maha: Student found dead in varsity classroom

A 24-year-old woman student of an open university was Sunday found dead in the classroom in Sangli in Maharashtra, the police said. The deceased Vaishali Nalwade was a second year student at the Shantiniketan Open University based in a building in Madhavnagar area of the city, an official said. Nalwade's body was spotted by some students in the classroom for Polytechnic course, he said, adding that it is not yet clear yet whether she killed herself or otherwise. Nalwade, who hailed from Mallewadi village in the district, had come to the college for studying on Sunday, the official said. He said police are awaiting a postmortem report to determine the exact cause of her death.

Guj: 4-day exhibition of art works begins in MS University

A four-day exhibition of art works by globally-renowned artists began Sunday at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda here. Ratan Parimoo, former dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and current chairman of the institute's alumni association, said the exhibition is to raise money to provide scholarships to poor students who want to pursue fine arts. He said the art works on display include those of Bhupen Khakhar, Padma Vibhushan awardee KG Subramanyan, sculptors Shanko Choudhary and Nagji Patel, as well as former Maharaja of Baroda Ranjitsinh Gaekwad. "There is a large treasure of Gandhian literature which has been published by Publications Division as Gandhian works of seminal importance. You should bring this to notice of your affiliated colleges and consider including in the libraries," a statement, sent by the UGC secretary to vice-chancellors, said. Caught on cam: Gurugram teacher pastes sellotape on students' mouth

A shocking incident has come to the fore wherein a teacher was captured putting sellotape over the mouths of two students.The incident took place on October 6 at Narayana e-Techno School, when a female teacher was seen pasting the mouths of two kindergarten students with sellotape in order to silence them. The whole incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the premises.The principal of the school, Gururaj, said the teacher was suspended immediately."Our teachers are very well trained to deal with all kinds of situations. However, this is a very strange unfortunate incident (taping mouths of students). The teacher was suspended. We will ensure that such an incident does not take place in the future," he said.

Kushwaha sits on fast over setting up Kendriya Vidyalaya

Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha on Saturday sat on a day-long fast here in protest against the "failure" of the Nitish Kumar government in the state to provide land for setting up a Kendriya Vidyalaya. Kushwaha, the Minister of State for HRD, alleged that request for land for setting up the school in Devkund area of the district had been sent to the state government four months ago, but there has been no headway in this regard so far. College principal, teachers gheraoed for 17 hours in Kolkata

Around 50 students of City College of Commerce and Business here gheraoed the principal and other faculty members for 17 hours, demanding that they be allowed to sit for first semester exams despite not meeting the required 60-per cent attendance. The gherao at the evening college by B.Com first-year students began at around 9 pm on Friday night and was lifted at 2 pm on Saturday, following the intervention of Calcutta University authorities. The protesters, however, vowed to continue their agitation if their demands were not met by Wednesday. Teacher tapes mouths of 2 primary students

A woman teacher of a private school here was suspended for allegedly putting sellotape across the mouths of two LKG children to keep them quiet during a class, school authorities said Saturday. A video of the incident, that took place in October, has been surfaced on social media. In the video, the teacher is purportedly seen putting sellotape across the mouths of two four-year-old students -- one boy and one girl -- during a class. Based on a complaint of the parents of the two students, the school management immediately suspended the teacher. "On the complaint of students' parents, we had taken strict action and suspended the teacher," Gururaj, the school principal said. Constitutional literacy programme to cover 50 lakh people in

: Kerala Literacy Mission has taken up a programme to educate an estimated 50 lakh people across the state on the fundamentals of the country's Constitution "The Constitutional literary course covers the history behind the framing of the constitution, fundamental rights and duties, secularism and gender equality," Director of Kerala State Literacy Mission, Dr P S Sreekala said. The programme launched recently will come to a close on January 26, 2019, she said. The State Literacy Mission, which will be conducting the programme, has brought out a handbook containing basic Constitutional principles. De-recognition row: Mount Carmel school urges students, parents to not panic

The Mount Carmel School in Dwarka which has been issued a de-recognition notice by the Delhi government over arbitrary fee hike said Friday that it would come out clean and urged students and their parents to not panic. The school administration, however, maintained that it has not received the notice yet. "Though we have not received the notice yet we have got to know about it from media reports. We urge the students and parents to not panic and assure that we would come out clean," Michael Williams, the director of Mount Carmel School told PTI. "Once we receive the notice, we will take the appropriate legal remedy and we have full faith in the legal system," he added.
