4-year-old girl 'inappropriately touched' by classmate in Delhi school

Parents of a four-year-old girl have alleged that their daughter was "inappropriately touched" by her classmate or someone else at a school in outer Delhi's Ranhola, police said Thursday. On Wednesday evening, the girl's mother lodged a complaint at the Ranhola police station alleging that her daughter was inappropriately touched by a four-year-old classmate or someone else. Following the incident, locals gathered in front of the school Thursday morning and ransacked the building. Police soon reached the spot and brought the situation under control, Seju Kuruvilla, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer), said. He said a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered and medical examination of the victim conducted. The accused has not been identified yet, the DCP said. Scolded by teacher, Class 7 student commits suicide in Delhi

Upset over being scolded by her teacher, a class 7 student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in west Delhi, police said Thursday. The teacher allegedly called the girl "characterless", which might have forced her to take the extreme step, her mother claimed. However, the police said an investigation was underway to ascertain the exact reason. The girl allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her house in Inderpuri on Saturday when her mother, an advocate, had gone to the court, a senior police officer said. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, the officer added. The girl's mother further said that on Friday, her daughter came home from school in tears and complained to her that she was scolded and verbally abused by a teacher. "She was so upset that she refused to go to school on Saturday. I promised her that I would accompany her on Monday since I had some work in the court the next day," she told PTI. SC allows Uttarakhand govt to take over private medical college

The Supreme Court Thursday directed a private medical college in Uttarakhand to hand over its land, building and all assets to the state government after its students raised issues of lack of infrastructure and teaching faculty there. A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman passed the order while hearing a petition filed by a group of students, who were admitted to the first year MBBS course in the college. The students have moved the apex court saying as there was lack of infrastructure and faculty, they should be transferred to any other medical college in the state. Deputy advocate general of Uttarakhand Jatinder Kumar Sethi told the bench that the state would be willing to take over the college along with its entire infrastructure and assets, both movable and immovable, so that it could meet the norms of Medical Council of India and affiliate with Dehradun's Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical University. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur Thursday said the hill-state was "fast emerging" as an education hub. Announcing the construction of two new buildings at the Government Degree College campus in Una, Thakur said the government will think about developing the institution as a regional centre. "Himachal Pradesh is fast emerging as an education hub in the country," said Thakur as he presided over the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the college. CBSE to discuss with states about removing marks disparity

The Centre has instructed the CBSE to discuss about how to remove the disparity between marks awarded to examinees by it and that by various state boards, Union minister Satya Pal Singh said here on Thursday. Citing an example, Singh said when students of the CBSE and various state boards seek admission in the under-graduate level of a university furnish their marksheets, it is found that their marks range from 98 per cent to 85 per cent. The university then has to make a comparison between papers of different boards and strike a ratio to arrive at an admission formula, he said. "We have already sent an instruction to the CBSE to discuss with other state boards on the issue," the union minister of state for human resources development said. Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh Thursday laid the foundation stone for a 'kisan haat' in Pusa in the national capital. He also laid the foundation stone for an international hostel at ICAR's Pusa campus. "With a view to encourage and attract youth towards agricultural education and cater to the rising number of students, an international hostel is being constructed," a statement quoted him as saying.
