The HRD Ministry has withdrawn the Kashmiri translations of certain sentences under its "Bhasha Sangam" initiative following a row. Last week, the ministry's Department of School Education and Literacy had initiated the "Bhasha Sangam", a celebration of linguistic diversity, with an aim to familiarise every child with simple dialogues in all the 22 languages under Schedule 8 of the Constitution. The row erupted over the wrong translations of sentences from English to Kashmiri, from Kashmiri to Roman and from Kashmiri to Devanagari. "Sentence translations in Kashmiri under Bhasha Sangam were prepared by NCERT in association with language experts from Dept of Education, J&K & University of Kashmir. @HRDMinistry is sensitive to the comments raised & has therefore decided to withdraw them," the ministry said in a tweet. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) on Monday urged the varsity to promulgate an ordinance on Reservation Roster for teaching positions. In July, the appointment of academic staff in higher education institutions (HEIs) was put on hold by the University Grants Commission till the Supreme Court issued its verdict on the special leave petition filed by the HRD Ministry against a court order curtailing reservation for SC/ST and OBCs. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Monday said one of its alumni was "voluntarily managing all the expenses" involved in the installation of Swami Vivekananda's statue in the campus. The statement comes days after the teachers' association and the students' union had questioned the source of funds for the construction of the statue, which will be set up next to the administration block, opposite the statue of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The Executive Council of the varsity had approved of the installation of the statue in its meeting last year in June. "Jawaharlal Nehru University will be celebrating the singular contribution of Swami Vivekananda to India's intellectual and philosophical heritage by installing a statue of this great son of India," said the varsity's registrar Pramod Kumar. The parents of the ninth standard student were irked by the headmaster's action and complained to the education department. They accused the school head of not understanding the sentiment behind not wearing footwear, police said. On the International Day of Disabled Persons, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Monday announced a scholarship scheme for the state's specially abled students.
