The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it will provide a USD 85 million loan to improve skill development eco-system in Odisha and establish an advanced skill training centre at Bhubaneswar. The project will help over 1.5 lakh people learn skills in priority sectors, including manufacturing, construction and services for formal employment, ADB said in a release. World Skill Centre (WSC) at Bhubaneswar will deliver eight training courses for 13,000 full-time students, provide training for 5,000 teachers, and train 1,000 assessors. Students, take note! Getting sufficient sleep during the exam week may help boost your grades, scientists have found. Researchers from Baylor University in the US invited students to participate in "The 8-hour Challenge", in which participants were given extra points if they completed an average eight hours of sleep for five nights during final exams week. The study found that those who completed the challenge performed better in exams. "Better sleep helped rather than harmed final exam performance, which is contrary to most college students' perceptions that they have to sacrifice either studying or sleeping," said Michael Scullin, from Baylor University. The success rate of women candidates in 2014 general elections was higher than that of their male counterparts, yet women in India still occupy just over 1 in 10 seats in Lok Sabha, notes a new book. A controversy erupted in the Aligarh Muslim University Monday after a group of vegetarian students alleged that they were served food cooked in oil used to prepare non-vegetarian dishes, a charge denied by the university. Students at the Sir Syed Hall (North), in a letter to the vice chancellor, alleged that they were served vegetarian food cooked in the same oil in which non-vegetarian meals had been made. They demanded action against the provost for negligence. The matter came to light on Sunday when Bhartiya Yuva Morcha's city unit chief Nikhil Maheshwari issued a statement alleging that the incident was a "deliberate ploy" to hurt the sentiments of Hindus. The US Consulate on Sunday launched a scholarship programme here for a select group of underprivileged students to hone up their English language skills. An offence has been registered against officials of a school in Latur district of Maharashtra for allegedly forcing a seven-year-old boy to stay back as his parents had not paid the fees. The alleged incident took place at an English-medium school in Uday Colony in Udgir tehsil in the district Friday. Parents of the student, who is in Class 2, had not paid a fee of Rs 12,000 for the current year as well as arrears of Rs 6,000 from the last year, a police officer said. On Friday, school authorities allegedly did not let the boy go home by the school bus and forced him to sit in the school's office. Eventually, his father reached the school and took him away. He then lodged a complaint with Udgir Rural Police against the concerned teacher, secretary and director of the school, the police official said. A case under IPC section 342 (wrongful confinement) was registered but nobody has been arrested as the probe is underway, the police official said.

Over 400 job offers have been made on the first day of the placement season at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, a press release from the institute has said. More than 362 companies have already registered and over 618 profiles have been opened by them, giving ample opportunity to students to choose their career wisely, it said. Of them, 256 were PPOs (pre-placement offers) and close to 150 were fresh ones, the statement said Saturday evening on the first day of placements.
