AI system can predict school violence

Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that can help predict which students are at higher risk of perpetrating school violence. The researchers found that machine learning - the science of getting computers to learn over time without human intervention - is as accurate as a team of child and adolescent psychiatrists, including a forensic psychiatrist, in determining risk for school violence. "Previous violent behaviour, impulsivity, school problems and negative attitudes were correlated with risk to others," said Drew Barzman, a child forensic psychiatrist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in the US. "Our risk assessments were focused on predicting any type of physical aggression at school. We did not gather outcome data to assess whether machine learning could actually help prevent school violence. Students present ideas for improving water urbanism in Varanasi

Students from America's Columbia University and India's IIT Kharagpur have presented unique ideas for improving urban life and reinventing water urbanism in Varanasi, according to an Indian official here. Seven teams, comprising post-professional urban design students at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the graduate students and scholars from IIT Kharagpur recently made final presentations on the project 'Rethinking Water Urbanism in Varanasi' as part of their curriculum at the Indian Consulate here. The Delhi Police today said it did not receive any intimation about the alleged controversial quotes written on the door of a chapel at Delhi University's St Stephen's. Students' Union president Sai Aashirwaad earlier said that inflammatory quotes like 'Mandir Yahi Banega' were found written on the chapel's main door, while an 'Om' symbol along with the words 'I'm going to hell' was found on the cross behind the chapel yesterday. "The messages, however, were cleared today," he said. The Delhi Police said they were not informed about any such incident. The college administration had announced preparatory holidays for students from April 28, with only those having practical exams attending the college. Assistant prof of Kashmir University missing, protests in varsity

An assistant professor of University of Kashmir here went missing, leading to protests in the varsity today, police said. Mohammad Rafi Bhat, a contractual assistant professor in the sociology department, went missing since yesterday, a police official said. The official said Bhat was a resident of Chundina area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. His family informed the university authorities about his disappearance this morning, the official added. They said protests rocked the university today over Bhat's disappearance, following which the vice chancellor met the protesting students and assured them that all efforts would be made to trace the missing lecturer. The university is in touch with the local police. Students are requested to maintain calm and cooperate, a university spokesman said in a statement. Hard Hackathons to be held across the country

The Centre will conduct 'Hard Hackathons' in some centres in which students will be asked to come up with innovations to address real life problems like water and energy, AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe has said. Sahasrabudhe told newsmen here that a hardware hackathon would be held as early as June. "We are probably going to have 11 centres. In each centre students will face with a unique problem or challenge for tackling problems ranging from water, energy and others." The centres, which would be spread across the country, will be equipped with hardware facility. IIT Kharagpur is overseeing the Hard Hackathon and the centres will be confirmed soom. The situation at Aligarh Muslim University remained peaceful today, days after protests rocked the campus over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah which hangs at the student union office. 1.20 lakh students from Ker to appear for NEET

Over 1.20 lakh students from Kerala will appear for tomorrow's National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), being conducted by the CBSE for medical and dental courses. About 1,20,792 candidates will appear for the test from the state in 226 centres spread across thedistricts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alapuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur. The CBSE has issued strict guidelines and dos and don'ts for those appearing for the test. Candidates have been asked not to carry stationery items like bits of paper, geometry box, pencil box, plastic pouch, pen scale, writing pad, eraser, mobile phone, blue tooth inside the examination hall. A strict dress code, banning wallets, goggles, handbags, belt, cap and ornaments, pendants, badge and brooch, shoes and heels has also been imposed. BHU undergraduate attacked by fellow students

A BHU undergraduate was allegedly attacked by a group of students with hockey sticks and a knife in the university campus over old enmity, police said. The injured student, identified as Ashutosh Maurya who lives in the Lal Bahadur Shastri hostel, was injured when he was attacked with a knife and hockey sticks by the group of students of the same university in front of the Hindi department. NAAC-affiliated inst should become autonomous in 10 years

AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe today said NAAC-affiliated institutions in the country should become autonomous in ten years, compared to over 50 per cent now. "Any accredited institution reaching the threshold of certain academic standard should go for autonomy," Sahasrabudhe told reporters here. The number of autonomous institutions in the country has to go from 50 percent to "60-70 per cent even 100 per cent in a decade's time. 200 illegally plying school vans booked by Delhi transport dept

The Delhi Transport Department has booked and penalised around 200 illegally plying school vans on the city roads in the last three days under a campaign against such vehicles, officials said. The move comes after a 7-year-old girl was killed while 18 other children were injured when an illegally-plying school van met with accident in north Delhi's Keshavpuram last month. "We have so far booked 200 vehicles under the drive launched on Wednesday. We will not allow such vehicles to ply on the roads and besides a fine of Rs 5,000, cancellation of registration certificate for three months is also being done," a senior transport department official said. Several teams of the Enforcement Wing of the department have been formed to catch such vehicles and the drive will be intensified from the coming week, he said.
