Students enrolling in humanities courses increased in past 3 yrs: UGC data

The number of students enrolling in humanities disciplines has increased in the past three years, according to UGC data. "The University Grants Commission (UGC) has stated that the total number of students enrolled in universities and colleges in the discipline of arts, humanities, social science including languages, oriental learning and area studies has increased in the last three years, a senior HRD ministry official said. According to the data, 1.22 crore students enrolled in humanities courses across the country in 2014-15 academic session, and the number rose to 1.25 crore and 1.26 crore in 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively. "There is a popular perception that those who take science courses are more studious and academically sound and there has been a stigma attached to humanities courses in the society. The perception has changed now. More and more students are opting for humanities courses and having successful careers," the official said.

9 children killed in knife attack in Chinese school

At least nine students were stabbed to death at a middle school in China's Shaanxi province.A male suspect has been detained, reported Xinhua.12 students were injured at the incident that took place on Friday evening.According to local government, seven of the deceased were female and two were male.The injured have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.Further investigation is on.

Mil tanker-school van collision: Condition of 4 injured children critical

The condition of four of the 17 children injured in a milk tanker-school van collision near the Kanhaiya Nagar metro station yesterday is critical, the police said today. They are in the ICU of AIIMS. The driver of the milk tanker, Sanjeev (38), who has been arrested, told the police that he had consumed liquor at a wedding around 2 am. The police had said the alcohol content in his blood was found to be 195mg/100ml. He lost control of the vehicle as he was drunk, and the milk tanker rammed into the school van coming from the wrong side, said a senior police officer. The driver of the school van had his earphones on at the time of the incident, the police had said yesterday. The officer said the four students, who are in the ICU at AIIMS, suffered multiple fractures in the accident that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl and injured 17 other students. Durishetty Anudeep tops 2017 Civil Services examination

Durishetty Anudeep, a serving Indian Revenue Service officer, has topped the prestigious civil services 2017 examination whose results were declared today by the Union Public Service Commission. A total of 990 candidates -- 750 men and 240 women -- have been recommended by the Commission for appointment to various central government services, a government statement said here. Anu Kumari and Sachin Gupta bagged the second and third position respectively in the coveted examination. Anudeep, an OBC candidate, qualified the examination with Anthropology as his optional subject. He has graduated with BE (Electronics & Instrumentation) degree from BITS, Pilani. Kumari topped among the female candidates. She has graduated with BSc (Hons) in Physics from the Delhi University and has done an MBA (Finance and Marketing) from IMT, Nagpur.

Meghalaya teachers recruitment case: CBI searches residence of Cong MLA

The CBI today searched five locations in Shillong, including the residence of an MLA and the Directorate of Elementary and Mass Education, in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers in 2008-09, officials said here. The locations searched included the residence of Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, who was the education minister at the time of the scam. The CBI has booked Lyngdoh and senior IAS officer P S Thangkhiew for allegedly manipulating score sheets during the recruitment of teachers in 2008-09, an official said on Thursday. Acting on the orders of the Meghalaya High Court, the CBI had registered an FIR under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy, forgery, and criminal breach of trust against Lyngdoh, who was the education minister at the time of the alleged scam, and Thangkhiew, a 1984-batch IAS officer, who was then principal secretary education, the official said. HC issues bailable warrants against over 15 DUSU poll candidates

The Delhi High Court today issued bailable warrants against over 15 candidates, who contested the 2017 DUSU polls, for failing to appear before it despite being served notice in connection with a PIL against defacement of public property. "They are not present despite direction. Bailable warrant issued," a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said. It also directed the students/candidates to work with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to restore its defaced properties across the city after taking into consideration the DMRC's submission that about 76 locations metro properties have been found to be permanently defaced and restoring them would cost over Rs 16 lakh and take six months time. "Give us an action plan. Have a painting competition and let Delhi government use those paintings in restoring the defaced properties," the bench asked the students present before it. Pb CM directs school education minister to examine teachers' demands

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today directed newly appointed School Education Minister O P Soni to examine various pending demands of school teachers for their early resolution, an official release said. Assuring a delegation of teachers of his government's commitment to redress their demands, the chief minister asked Soni to have detailed discussions with representatives of various teachers' associations on issues concerning them, including the transfer policy, rationalization policy, release of salaries on time besides regularization of services of employees in various societies, the release said. Four officials suspended after Kushinagar tragedy

The Uttar Pradesh government has placed four officials under suspension on charges of laxity following the death of 13 children in a train-school van collision here, an official said today. Those suspended with immediate effect were Basic Education Officer, Kushinagar, Hemant Rao, Block Education Oficer (of Duddahi) Shesh Bahadur Singh, Assistant Road Transport Officer (Enforcement) Rajkishor Trivedi (posted in Kushinagar) and Passenger Tax Officer of the transport department Ranveer Singh Chauhan, District Magistrate Anil Kumar Singh told PTI. Noida govt schools perform better than aided schools: Survey

The average performance of students in government schools in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh was better than those in aided schools last year, a National Council of Educational Research And Training survey has found. The NCERT survey found that the average performance of students in government and aided schools in environment studies subject in Class 3 was 65.59 per cent and 65.53 per cent respectively. For the same subject in Class 5, government school students outperformed aided school students by a margin of 25 per cent, it said. In language subject, the average performance of government school students for Class 3, 5 and 8 were 69.78 per cent, 68.21 per cent and 57.84 per cent respectively. The performance of students in aided schools for the same classes were 63.14 per cent, 50.94 per cent and 54.17 per cent. Suhas Pednekar appointed new Vice Chancellor of Mumbai varsity

Principal of the city-based Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Suhas Raghunath Pednekar, was today appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, who is Chancellor of all public universities in the state, made the appointment. The governor handed over the letter of appointment to Dr Pednekar at Raj Bhavan here today. Pednekar, a professor of chemistry, has been appointed as the VC for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier, a Raj Bhavan statement issued here said. He succeeds Sanjay Deshmukh, who was removed from the post of VC of the university on October 24 last year. Devanand Shinde, vice chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur, was holding the additional charge of the post of vice chancellor since then. The governor had constituted a search committee under the chairmanship of Dr K Kasturirangan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) .
