Chinese vice-dean accused of 'inappropriate' behaviour

A faculty member at a prestigious university in Shanghai says one of the vice-deans at the institution's media school has had his title revoked due to "inappropriate" behaviour toward female students. Wei Wuhui, an assistant professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University's School of Media and Design, told The Associated Press today that faculty was informed at a regular staff meeting that Xie Yungeng is no longer vice dean because of "inappropriate remarks and inappropriate actions toward female students." Wei also posted an account of the faculty meeting on his public WeChat account late Wednesday. Xie and the school's propaganda office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Caixin, a prominent Beijing-based publication, also reported Wei's demotion.

Tripura govt seeks relaxation of NCTE rules

Tripura Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said unless regulations laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and Right to Education are relaxed the state would face a crisis of over 10,000 teachers in different schools of the state. "We have 12,222 posts of school teachers lying vacant. Even if we recruit all B.Ed trained candidates and those under training right now, the number would be 1,500, Nath told reporters here. Nath said thousands of students would suffer if the norms were not relaxed. Earlier on April 20, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb sought the Prime Minister"s intervention to grant one-time relaxation in educational and professional qualifications for teachers in Tripura. One killed, 17 students injured in school van-tanker collision

A seven-year-old girl died and 17 students were injured after a milk tanker rammed into a school van this morning near Kanhaiya Nagar metro station in northwest Delhi, police said. The school van was carrying children from two schools in Keshavpuram, they added. The deceased was identified as Garima and the injured children are being treated at different hospitals, police said. The drivers of both the vehicles were detained, they added. Further details are awaited.

11 students killed in train-vehicle collision in UP

At least 11 school students were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a passenger train at an unmanned crossing.The incident took place on Thursday early morning in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar.All students are said to be from Divine Public School.A total of 20 students were travelling in the vehicle. The remaining, who suffered injuries were immediately shifted to the nearby hospital for further treatment.More details are awaited.

Maha to conduct transfers of ZP teachers online: Pankaja Munde

In a bid to maintain transparency in transfer of teachers attached to Zilla Parishad schools, the Maharashtra government has decided to conduct the process online, Rural development Minister Pankaja Munde said today. Speaking to reporters here after meeting representatives of various teachers' associations, the minister said the move will cut down political interferences and also ensure that no injustice is done to any teacher. "The state government had laid a new policy for transferring Zilla Parishad teachers but some teachers' organisations opposed the move and approached court. "However, the court has given its consent to conduct the transfers as per the policy of the state government. Sexual Harassment: HC seeks reply from JNU, Prof Atul Johri, Delhi Police

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices and sought a reply from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) authorities, Delhi police and Professor Atul Johri by May 2 on a plea filed by female students seeking Johri's suspension and declaration that he should not be allowed to enter the university campus.In March, Delhi's Patiala House Court had granted bail to Johri, who was accused of sexually harassing a group of female students in the campus.Johri was released on bail hours after he was arrested by the Delhi police.At least nine women had filed FIRs against the professor from the School of Life Sciences, accusing him of sexual harassment.Earlier, the All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA) had also staged protests outside Vasant Kunj police station and submitted a memorandum in connection with the alleged molestation charges against Johri.They claimed that the protests were being staged as despite numerous complaints by female students and FIRs filed against the ...

Ohio school district allows teachers, staff to carry weapons

A school board at a southwest Ohio district where a student shot and wounded two classmates has voted to allow teachers and staff to carry weapons. WLWT-TV reports the Madison Local School District board voted unanimously yesterday to allow employees to "defend and protect students." James Austin Hancock was 14 when he opened fire at Madison Junior-Senior High School in February 2016. Two students were wounded and two others were injured in the ensuing melee. The new policy says staff members who wish to carry a firearm must receive written authorisation from the superintendent, have a concealed carry permit and undergo active shooter training. School district officials haven't said when the policy will be implemented. The Madison schools are north of Cincinnati in Butler County.

Over 6 lakh CBSE Class 12 students take economics retest

Over six lakh Class 12 CBSE students appeared for the retest of economics paper conducted successfully today, almost a month after it was leaked leading to a nationwide protest and outrage. The exam was conducted successfully at over 4,000 centres across the country. The candidates took the exam at the centres allotted to them earlier, a senior CBSE official said. The CBSE had announced the re-test after reports of the leak surfaced on March 28. Then, there were also reports of the CBSE Class 10 mathematics paper being leaked, but the board decided against a re-test of the Class 10 paper, saying the examination was "largely an internal segment" of the school education system. For the economics paper re-exam, the board had said, "Class 12 exams are a gateway to higher education and various professional competitive exams which have limited seats... Therefore, giving undue advantage to a handful of beneficiaries of the alleged leak of the economics paper would not be in larger interest ..

HC questions JNU for not taking action against prof accused of sexual harassment

The Delhi High Court today directed the Jawaharlal Nehru University to treat the representations of women students as complaints and initiate a probe against its professor on charges of sexual harassment, while questioning the varsity for not taking any steps in the matter. The court also sought the response of the varsity on the petition by the women students seeking suspension of the professor Atul Kumar Johri and to restrain him from entering the campus. The plea has sought that a safe working environment be provided to the students there. Justice Rajiv Shakdher also issued notice to the professor on the plea which alleged that despite making various representations to the varsity, it has not taken any action against Johri. "Can't you (JNU) advise him to stay outside the campus till the enquiry is completed? ... Can't you treat the representations as complaints? The core issue is that the students should feel safe in the campus. I am not saying you completely trash the professor. ..

Five teens wounded as gang fires on Mexican school

An armed gang opened fire on a high school in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, wounding five students, prosecutors said. Witnesses of the attack yesterday said the gunmen arrived at the entrance of the Federalized High School in the state capital Ciudad Victoria and opened fire. They then entered the school and fired more shots. The five injured students, two females and three males aged 15-18, were given first aid by members of the Red Cross and taken to a hospital across the street from the school. One of the injured is thought to be in a serious condition. Five people -- three men and two women -- were arrested in a police operation in a neighborhood of the same city following the attack, the state prosecutor's office said. Police do not know the motive for the shooting but say organized crime groups operating in the state recruit young students as drug dealers. HC seeks JNU's response on plea to suspend prof accused of sexual harassment

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of the Jawaharlal Nehru University on a plea by several women students seeking suspension of its professor Atul Kumar Johri, against whom eight FIRs have been lodged alleging sexual harassment. Justice Rajiv Shakdher also issued notice to the professor on the students' petition seeking restriction on his entry into the varsity campus and provision of a safe working environment. The court asked the JNU to treat the representations of the women students as complaints for initiating action against Johri and directed the Delhi Police to show the statements of students recorded before a magistrate to the JNU vice chancellor so that he can initiate preliminary enquiry against the professor. The court was informed that eight FIRs have been lodged against the Department of Life Sciences professor based on the complaints of eight women students. He was arrested in March and granted bail by the court, but the authorities had not taken any action ..

Sexual favours scandal: MKU asst prof held, research scholar surrenders

A senior faculty member of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has been arrested, while a research scholar surrendered before a court today in connection with the sexual favours scandal involving a woman college teacher, police said. V Murugan, an assistant professor of the university, was arrested last night and produced this morning before a court in nearby Sattur, which remanded him to a five-day custody of the CB-CID. Research student Karuppasamy of the university surrendered before a Madurai court and was remanded to judicial custody till tomorrow, the police said. Suspended assistant professor Nirmala Devi, the main accused in the scandal, has reportedly told the CB-CID that Murugan and Karuppasamy had instigated her to lure the students to extend sexual favours to the officials of the university, in return for higher marks and money. 28 pc increase in Indian students in New Zealand: High Commission

There has been a 28 per cent increase in number of Indian students enrolling in different varsities in New Zealand last year, the country's High Commission said here today. "New Zealand has been ranked as the country in the world for educating students for the future according to a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Our education helps students develop skills the world needs and discover new ways of learning while gaining all the benefits of studying in a fair, open and free society," said Joanna Kempkers, New Zealand High Commissioner. According to the statistics released by the High Commission, 28 per cent increase has been recorded in the number of Indian students choosing to study at New Zealand universities in 2017.
