The JNU administration has alleged that the varsity's students union members manhandled the Dean of Students, a charge denied by the students' body. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Registrar Pramod Kumar yesterday issued a statement along with CCTV footage, accusing JNUSU agitators of manhandling Dean of Students Umesh Ashok Kadam during a meeting. West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today said that the state government will ask the management of a reputed girls school in the city whether it had secured written admission from 10 students that they had indulged in lesbianism. A section of the media had reported that the school had forced written undertakings from 10 of its students on Monday that they had indulged in lesbianism in a classroom. The school's move had triggered protests from guardians. Chattterjee told reporters here he had never come across reports in the past. "We are not treating the issue lightly. The Madras High Court today set up a committee to look into the education scenario of Tamil Nadu and suggest measures to reduce incidence of violence and improve the emotional well-being and academic performance of students. The six-member committee comprising education department officials, academicians and experts in the field of psychiatry was constituted by justices S Vimala and T Krishnavalli of the Madurai bench. It set up the panel while hearing a habeas corpus petition seeking to produce a 19-year-old girl, who went missing. The girl, produced by the police in the court, said she had left home fearing that her father would admonish her for scoring low marks in the examinations. Four teenage students of two high schools in city drowned in Kali dam near here today where they had gone for swimming, police said. The deceased included three students of class 9 and one student of class 8, according to a police official. The students decided to visit the dam after they got early break from their schools in noon due to ongoing Board examinations, he said. The official said the tragedy occurred apparently after the boys failed to gauge the depth of the water in the dam. He said locals rushed to rescue the students after they raised an alarm, but couldn't save them. The deceased are identified as Bhargav Godiya (15), Chirag Bangaria (15), Rainis Makwana (15), and Nikunj Jagdishbhai (14). Further investigations are underway.
The CBSE today directed examination centres to ensure safe delivery of answer books to its headquarters after an official of a private school in the national capital was found carrying answer sheets of Class XII chemistry exam in Delhi Metro. The board, however, clarified that secrecy of the answer books in the particular case has not been compromised with and the sanctity of examination has been maintained. "The board has issued detailed guidelines to centre superintendents, which includes safe delivery of answer books. They have been asked to personally ensure that such instances are not repeated," a senior official of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said. "It has also been verified that the secrecy of the answer books has not been compromised with and sanctity of the examination has been maintained," the official added. The chief seretaries of Mizoram and Assam would hold talks in Delhi on March 20 on the border dispute between the two neighbouring states in the wake of protests by students, which turned violent recently. Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana Lalzirliana informed the Assembly that the Mizoram government had suggested that the deputy commissioners of Hailakandi district in Assam and Kolasib district in Mizoram should hold talks on the border dispute before March 15, but did not receive any response.
