After protests, Raje govt revokes Dress Code in colleges order
Buckling under widespread protests, especially by students, the Vasundhara Raje dispensation in Rajasthan today revoked its recent controversial order on implementing a dress code for government run colleges in the state. The chief minister said the Directorate of College Education had issued the order to introduce uniforms in government colleges based on suggestions by student representatives. It has been brought to my attention that many students are not happy with this decision. I have therefore asked that uniforms be made voluntary rather than compulsory, Raje tweeted. We are here to provide our girls with whatever they require to excel in their education, she said. On March 4, the BJP government in Rajasthan had announced a dress code in state-run colleges from the academic year 2018-19, drawing protests from students and opposition Congress which dubbed it as an attempt to saffronise institutions. Over 32,000 posts vacant in Assam schools: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Over 32,000 posts, including nearly 28,000 teaching posts, are lying vacant in government schools across Assam, the state Assembly was informed today. Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at present 15,852 teaching posts are lying vacant in middle english and high schools of the state. In the primary schools, the vacancy of regular teachers stands at 12,121, Sarma said in a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar. He also said that 999 third grade and 2,113 fourth grade posts are vacant in the middle english and high schools, while 1,189 fourth grade posts are vacant in primary schools. The minister said that steps are being taken to fill the vacancies. Currently, 99,234 teachers are working in primary schools, while 55,094 are teaching in middle english and high schools, Sarma said. Lecturer shot dead in college premises in Haryana's Sonipat distt
An ad hoc lecturer of a college in Kharkhoda in this district was shot dead today allegedly by a student, police said. The deceased, Rajesh Malik, was aged between 35 to 40 years of age, they said. Police said the youth, who was yet to be identified, was believed to be the student of the same college. The reason behind the killing of the lecturer was yet to be ascertained, they added. The youth fired three to four shots at the lecturer with a revolver in the college premises, police officials said adding that one of the bullets hit Malik in the chest. He succumbed to injuries later, they said. The accused fled the spot after firing shots at the lecturer, police said. Investigations were in progress, they said. Notably, a class 12 student had allegedly shot dead his school principal with his father's licensed revolver in Yamunanagar district in January this year.

Telangana school education dept. declares half day schools during summer
Telangana school education department on Monday issued a circular, declaring "half day schools during summer" from March 15.The department issued an order to all the Regional Joint Directors of School Education (RJDSEs) and district education officers to take necessary action regarding the same.The circular read, "Half day schools will run during summer i.e. from March 15 onwards till last working day of the academic year 2017-18. The schools i.e. primary, upper primary and high schools of all managements i.e. both government, government aided and private managements will function from 8am to 12.30 pm. In respect of high schools having SSC exam centers, the school timing will be from 1pm to 5pm"."Optional holidays will be applicable for schools rather than individual teachers. Therapy dogs may help students fight stress
Spending some time with dogs can help boost wellness among stressed out students, a study has found. Therapy dog sessions for stressed-out students are an increasingly popular offering at North American universities. "Therapy dog sessions are becoming more popular on university campuses, but there has been surprisingly little research on how much attending a single drop-in therapy dog session actually helps students," said Emma Ward-Griffin, research assistant at University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. "Our findings suggest that therapy dog sessions have a measurable, positive effect on the wellbeing of university students, particularly on stress reduction and feelings of negativity," said Ward-Griffin, lead author of the study published in the journal Stress and Health. The Central University of Himachal Pradesh will function from Dehra and Dharamsala in Kangra district, Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj today informed state Assembly. Replying to a question of Rakesh Singha (CPIM), he said the state government has transferred land in the name of the Central University at Dehra. In Dharamsala, the government had earmarked land for the university, but the same has to be transferred yet. He said the issue of location of main campus of the Central University had been pending for long, but the government will now settle the issue and lay the foundation stone for the Central University in this year. Telangana schools to work half day during summer
Schools in Telangana would function for half day from March 15 till the last working day of the current academic year in view of summer. Pak's Punjab bans dance performances by students in schools
Pakistan's Punjab province has banned dance performances by students at any function organised in private and government schools with the government warning that any violation may lead to the suspension of the institution's licence, a media report said today. The Punjab School Education Department (PSED) imposed the ban after it received complaints that children were being made to dance on Pakistani and Indian songs at school events, a top PSED official was quoted as saying by the DawnNewsTV. The ban extends to performances on occasions of prize distribution, parents' day, teachers' day and other events, PSED Chief Executive Officer Zahid Bashir Goraya said. Following reports of increase in cases of sexual abuse of children, some critics were of the opinion that making kids dance leads to their sexualisation, the report said. The license of those schools which allows or forces children to dance at any event would be suspended by the education department, Goraya warned.

Arunachal Budget tabled, total outlay at Rs 19,261 crore
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein today presented the state Budget for the fiscal 2018-19, with a projected deficit of Rs 546 crore and a total outlay of Rs 19,261 crore. An Indonesian university whose ban on niqab face veils made global headlines has reversed the policy following criticism that it trampled on personal choice. Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta issued the edict last week to more than three dozen niqab-wearing students -- and warned they could be expelled for non-compliance. The school, which has about 10,000 students, had said the now-cancelled rule was aimed at countering religious extremism in the world's biggest Muslim majority country. "The guidance concerning students using a face veil will be revoked in order to maintain an academic climate that is conducive to fairness," said a statement issued by the university at the weekend.
