JNU students vote for revival of PhD entrance exam in 'referendum'

Students participating in a "referendum" held by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) have voted heavily for reinstating the entrance exam for PhD admissions in the prestigious university. In the polling, that took place between 5 pm and 10 pm on Saturday in the hostel areas on the university campus, 1,323 of the 1,424 votes cast favoured bringing back the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE). Ninety-six voted against it while five votes were declared invalid. The Left-wing All India Students' Association (AISA), which holds the JNUSU president post, had urged students to vote for the restoration of the entrance exam. In a statement, the university student union criticized the JNU vice-chancellor for allegedly backtracking on her promise, made during a 16-day hunger strike, to conduct an in-house PhD entrance exam for 2025 admissions. Women students of IIM-Nagpur comprised 46 per cent of the total 267 MBA graduates from the 2023-25 batch, marking a three per cent increase compared to the previous batch. In the 2022-24 cohort, nearly 43 per cent of regular MBA graduates were women, according to officials from the Indian Institute of Management-Nagpur (IIM-N). The institute recorded 100 per cent placements for the current batch, with leading companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, BNP Paribas, and Vedanta participating in recruitment. Notably, three students received record-breaking offers, and four secured international placements. The highest salary offers stood at Rs 69.57 LPA for final placements and Rs 2.70 lakh for summer internships, while the average packages were Rs 18.07 LPA and Rs 89,856, respectively.
