Against logic of labelling children as child actors: Srijit

Labelling children in films as 'child actors' is a "logic" that does not find favour with national award winning director Srijit Mukherjee, who says they should not be treated in any different manner than regular actors. Talking about his next directorial 'Uma', where the centre of focus is a 13-year-old girl, he said she would give all the right expressions in a very spontaneous, uninhibited manner and even improvise on occasions. "I never share the logic of labelling a kid in the cast as child actor. Nor do I believe a child should be treated in any different manner," the 'Begum Jaan' director told reporters here, after the trailer launch of the film at Sovabazar Razbari yesterday. Uma, slated for a June 1 release, stars Sara, the daughter of actor Jisshu Sengupta, who also plays her reel father in the movie. The top job, depicted as 'M' in the Bond films where she was portrayed by actress Judi Dench, is likely to go to a female frontrunner as part of the succession planning process at the UK's foreign intelligence agency, The Sunday Times' reported. The woman, who cannot be named for security reasons, has run agent networks around the world and has proved her strong operational capabilities on overseas postings over many years, according to people who have worked with her. The current MI6 chief, Alex Younger, is understood to have himself singled out the female spymaster who was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II for her work on foreign policy. She is now considered by Britain's intelligence community as the frontrunner to succeed Younger, whose five-year term as chief will end in November 2019. While the UK's domestic intelligence

Will take legal action: Twinkle Khanna over 'Rustom' costume auction row

Twinkle Khanna today responded to a message by an Indian Navy officer, who warned her against auctioning a costume piece worn by her husband Akshay Kumar in the film, "Rustom", saying she "will not retaliate with violent threats but by taking legal action". The author-producer had recently supported Akshay's announcement to sell off the "actual naval uniform" he donned in the 2016 film, which was loosely based on the 1959 Nanavati murder case. Khanna received a lot of flak on social media for backing the sale, the proceeds from which would go to "the cause of animal rescue and welfare". The original message, by Lt Col Sandeep Ahlawat, was shared by senior journalist Sandeep Unnithan on Twitter, who claimed the author was "one of the finest men in uniform" known to him. In a Facebook post, Lt Col Ahlawat called Khanna's idea of auctioning the costume "as sick as your funnybones jokes/book/blog". He wrote what Akshay wore in the film, as Commander Rustom Pavri for which he won his ...

Robin Williams' calls helped Steven Spielberg get through 'Schindler's List' shoot

Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg has revealed he heavily depended on actor Robin Williams during the shooting of Holocaust drama, "Schindler's List" in the winter of Poland. The 71-year-old director, who became friends with Williams after working together in 1991 film "Hook", said he would rely on the episodes of "Saturday Night Live" and weekly phone calls by the late actor to deal with the catharsis of the Oscar-winning period film, USA Today reported. "Robin knew what I was going through, and once a week, Robin would call me on schedule and he would do 15 minutes of stand-up on the phone, and I would laugh hysterically, because I had to release so much. "But the way Robin is on the telephone, he'd always hang up on the loudest, best laugh you'd give him. He'd never say goodbye, just hang up on the biggest laugh," Spielberg said. The director was speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival's 25th anniversary screening of the movie here. The film went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture .
