Nate Parker to direct detective drama 'The Birth of a Nation'

Nate Parker has been roped in to direct detective drama "Black & Blue" making it his first helming project since "The Birth of a Nation." "Black & Blue" is based on the life of Los Angeles Police Department detective Ralph Waddy, who died last year, reported Deadline. Parker is rewriting Jim McGrath's script. M B Entertainment's Steven Jensen has bought Waddy's life rights. He will produce along with Darren Enenstein, Shondrella Avery, Adam R Sanders, and Lenny Rosenberg. Avery will also act in the film. The producers plan to begin filming in July in Los Angeles. During his tenure at the Los Angeles Police Department, Waddy was involved in the capture of Charles Manson and his followers who were convicted in the 1969 murders of actress Sharon Tate and seven others, and "Skid Row Slasher" Vaughn Orrin Greenwood was convicted of slashing the throats of nine transients in 1974 and 1975. Spice Girls working on an animated superhero movie

An animated film project starring the Spice Girls is in works and is being shopped to potential production partners. The group's members include Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice). According to Variety, the five group members will voice the character each of which will have her own "girl power" Unique to that group member that reflects each girl's personality. "The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They're the most successful girl group on the planet. It's just what Marvel or Disney needs," a source said. The news follows recent rumours that the British girl group founded in 1994 was thinking about stage a reunion tour.

Netflix films should compete at Emmys, not Oscars, says Spielberg

Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg believes that when it comes to awards, movies made by streaming giant Netflix should compete at the Emmys instead of the Oscars. In an interview with ITV News, the 71-year-old director addressed the debate that whether the films premiering on the streaming platforms qualify to compete at the awards functions with movies that get a theatrical release. "I don't believe that films that are just given token qualifications, in a couple of theatres for less than a week, should qualify for the Academy Award nominations," Spielberg said. He stressed that smaller filmmakers were allowing streaming platforms to support their films which confine them to the small screen. "Fewer and fewer filmmakers are going to struggle to raise money, or to compete at Sundance and possibly get one of the speciality labels to release their films theatrically, publicly," Spielberg said. Tiffany Haddish joins 'The Lego Movie' sequel

Comedienne Tiffany Haddish has come on board "The Lego Movie" sequel to voice one of the key characters. To be directed by Mike Mitchell the movie will see original voice stars Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks returning as regular guy turned Master Builder Emmet Brickowoski and Wyldstyle, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers are "Lego Movie" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, along with Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Jill Wilfert from Lego Group, Chris McKay, and Jinko Gotoh are executive producing. Lord and Miller wrote the first draft of the script for the sequel with Raphael Bob-Waksberg coming on board for a re-write. Matt Fogel has written the latest draft. The plot and details of Haddish's character are being kept under wraps. "The Lego Movie 2" is set to release on February 8, 2019. "The Lego Movie" grossed nearly USD 470 million worldwide in 2014 amid strong support from critics and fans.

Irrfan Khan not consulting any Ayurveda doctor: spokesperson

Debunking the reports that Irrfan is consulting Ayurveda doctor Vaidya Balendu Prakash, who also treated Steve Jobs, the spokesperson said the actor once spoke to the doctor about his health but there have been no further "conversation or consultation". "As suggested by recent news reports, Mr Khan is not consulting with Vaidya Balendu Prakash. He at one point had contacted him but other than one phone call there has been no conversation or consultation whatsoever. "It is unacceptable to be using someone's illness for your own publicity and personal gain. Like Irrfan Khan's previous statements, we all need to respect the space asked for and wait for him or his wife's statement for any further update," Irrfan's spokesperson said in a statement. The 51-year-old actor had recently said that he will be travelling abroad for the treatment.
