Turkey journalists stand up for jailed colleague after 500 days

A group of Turkish journalists today staged a protest urging freedom for all jailed colleagues, after the chairman of an opposition daily marked spending 500 days in prison. The Cumhuriyet daily's editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu and investigative reporter Ahmet Sik walked free from prison last Friday after more than a year in jail although they remain on trial. But paper's chairman Akin Atalay is still held in jail and is the only suspect of 17 Cumhuriyet staff probed in the case still behind bars. Atalay spent his 500th day in detention on Wednesday, the paper marking it with an editorial headlined "Injustice on its 500th day." They are accused of terror-related crimes and face up to 43 years in prison if convicted. The next trial hearing is set for Friday. The freed journalists as well as lawyers gathered outside Istanbul's main Caglayan court on Thursday morning, carrying Atalay's picture. "We will continue to do journalism because journalism is not a crime," Sik told the crowd. The

Fiction format more suitable for biopics, says Hirani

Rajkumar Hirani, whose next is a biopic on his 'Munnabhai' star Sanjay Dutt, believes the actor's life story would translate better in the fiction format. Actor Ranbir Kapoor plays the lead role in the movie. When asked if the Dutt biopic could've been turned into a documentary, Hirani said, "In a film like 'Sanju', I think it's more engaging as a fictional film where you see another actor doing it. Otherwise, I can just say, 'Ok here's a man who did drugs, did this' it's boring," he said at 'Films For Change' campaign launch of 'Good Pitch India' hosted by The Indian Documentary Foundation. "I feel biopics are more interesting if you see them in a fictional format, otherwise they get boring," he added. Hirani said the medium of documentary suits certain subjects better and he experienced this with his film "PK". "Certain subjects will be more engaging if they are done in a fictional format. Certain subjects will probably say more in a documentary format. In 'PK', I wanted to talk ...

There should be space for dissent, disagreement: Nandita Das

Filmmaker Nandita Das says it is extremely important for the society to foster a climate where there is space for differences of opinion as it is the only way one can grow. Das, who was at the receiving end with her film "Firaaq" which chronicled the Gujarat riots, says a group of people cannot decide what others can or cannot see. "We have to have the space for dissent, disagreement. A society, a human being can only grow when you have that space for difference of opinion to foster. There are civil ways of sharing. Now with social media, anybody and everybody can share their thoughts...," Das said in a media interaction. "There are some TV shows, I don't like at all. I find them regressive but am I going to break the TV, catch you by the throat and say 'don't see it'? I will tell my friends, write about it. Let's use those platform to share our dissent." The filmmaker said there should be a civil way of disagreeing. "What you may be offended by I may really like, what I may get ...

Looking forward to see Nandita's version of Manto: Hansal Mehta

Director Hansal Mehta, whose project on noted writer Sadat Hasan Manto could not take off, is looking forward to see how Nandita Das has approached the author's life. Mehta had started working on the script with actor Rajkummar Rao but the director could not find producers for the movie and eventually moved on to "Aligarh". Das' version features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Manto and focuses on his years in Mumbai. "Both Nandita Das and I were working on the 'Manto' script at the same time. She had called me saying she is also making a film on 'Manto'. I told her to go ahead and do it. I told her that I would make something else. I was anyways not getting producers for it," Mehta told PTI. "Immediately after 'Shahid', I was going to make 'Manto' with Rajkummar (Rao). We had done a photo shoot with him. But it did not happen as we were not able to find producers....The scale, the budget at that time was not feasible," he added. When asked if he was disheartened that the project could not ...

SC stays defamation complaint of Jay Shah, chides media

The Supreme Court today asked a Gujarat trial court not to proceed till April 12 with the criminal defamation complaint of Jay Shah, son of BJP president Amit Shah, against news portal 'The Wire' and its scribes and chided especially the electronic media for projecting "whatever they feel like" against a person. A visibly irked Chief Justice Dipak Misra tongue-lashed the media, especially the TV channels and portals, and asked: "Can somebody reproduce something in official/public domain and add something 'defamatory' to it. Are innuendos in the realm of defence or realm of freedom". "Can they write whatever they want? What they write sometimes amounts to serious contempt of court. Is this journalism? Electronic media should be more responsible. I do not want to name channels, but some people think they are Popes sitting on the pulpit, passing judgement. They should be more responsible and the realisation must dawn upon them," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y .
