Romance more realistic than movies on serial killers: Curtis

He is the man behind frothy, happily ever after romances, the one who brought an "it can happen" element to a Hollywood star telling her shopowner boyfriend, "I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." If that pivotal, but admittedly soppy scene, from "Notting Hill", with Julia Roberts playing the top Hollywood star to Hugh Grant's shy bookstore owner, rings true, it is entirely to Richard Curtis and his pen. For the British screenwriter-filmmaker, with hits such as "Four Weddings And A Funeral", "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually" behind him, "romance is more realistic than movies made on serial killers". He said he is unable to comprehend the argument that serious films are more real than romantic comedies. "I am so lucky that people watch my films again and again. I disagree that romantic films are not realistic. It is so strange that someone makes a movie about a serial killer -- there have been only three of them in the history -- and everybody says,

Rwanda shuts radio for denigrating women

Rwanda's media watchdog has ordered a US-owned Christian radio station shut for three months after a "vile" sermon against women, it has said. The radio station, Amazing Grace FM, broadcast a sermon by local pastor Nicolas Niyibikora on January 29, in which he called women dangerous, evil and against the plans of God. The broadcast sparked outrage and prompted separate complaints from the National Women's Association and the Women's Journalist Association to the Rwanda Media Commission, which oversees journalist ethics. "The sermon was denigrating women in the most vile manner," commission chief Edmund Kagire said in a statement on Monday, demanding the station and preacher "issue a public apology for the damage they have caused." The radio station is owned by American evangelist Gregg Schoof, who has been previously warned for airing inflammatory shows. Schoof said he condemned any denigration of women. Rwanda has exerted strong control over its media since the 1994 genocide when ...

TV anchor sorry after Dutch mock 'canal skating' comment

US journalist Katie Couric said she was "on thin ice" and apologised today after she was relentlessly mocked for claiming Dutch success at the Olympics was because skating is an "important mode of transport" in the Netherlands. Hot on the heels of their stunning medals triumph in Sochi in 2014, the Dutch men and women speed skaters are already notching up major victories at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. During Friday's opening ceremony, as the Dutch team entered the stadium, Couric pondered to her audience of millions watching NBC television in the United States: "Why are they so good, you may be asking yourselves? "Because skating is an important mode of transportation in a city like Amsterdam. Amsterdam "has lots of canals that can freeze in winter. So for as long as the canals have existed the Dutch have skated on them to get from place to place to race each other and to have fun", the veteran broadcaster added innocently. But her comments sparked a Twitter backlash with people .

China to pick 5,000 movie theatres for propaganda screenings

China plans to select 5,000 movie theatres to screen propaganda films and will boost their box offices with group sales, discounted tickets and other financial backing. China's film regulator said in a notice posted on the internet today that the policy is intended to promote specific movies at special times to create a "people's theatre front," a throwback to language used during the era of Mao Zedong. China, the world's second-biggest film market, saw movie ticket sales rise 13.5 percent last year to over $8.6 billion. Chinese-made movies accounted for 54 percent of ticket sales, with baldly nationalistic action thriller "Wolf Warrior 2" topping the box office. The ruling Communist Party is anxious to promote more productions with patriotic themes and exercises broad control over scripts and shooting permits.
