Mexican artist Tania Candiani gave a brief but emphatic performance on the inaugural day of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale by replacing the strings of a loom with that of the sitar, thus highlighting the way everyday sounds impact humans. Collaborating with compatriot artist Carlos Chinchillas and Kochi's Ranesh Reju (guitarist) and Vinay Murali (violin-maker), the team at Aspinwall House went on to transform a traditional weaving loom into a musical instrument with strings. For the project, Candiani used a local loom in disrepair condition. "The idea was to showcase the slowly dying art of handloom weaving in Kerala," she said on Wednesday, having replaced the loom threads with sitar strings. "We ensured we won't tamper with the aesthetics of the loom. So we used the same technique and design to reproduce and repurpose to the logic of sound to produce music." Film director A R Murugadoss has moved the Madras High Court, seeking to quash a case filed against him over certain scenes in the Vijay-starrer 'Sarkar' that were critical of the welfare schemes of the ruling AIADMK. When the petition by the film director came up Wednesday, Justice Anand Venkatesh adjourned the matter to Friday and orally directed the additional public prosecutor representing the Tamil Nadu government not to take any action till then. The police have registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC, including 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 153A(1)(a) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, language etc.). Women stars may still be fighting for pay-parity and inclusivity in Hollywood but a new study has revealed that the films fronted by them are better earners at the box office than those led by men. The study, conducted by talent agency Creative Artists Agency (C.A.A) and tech company shift7, analysed a sample of 350 movies from 2014 to 2017, out of which 105 were led by women while 245 featured male stars. The films which passed the Bechdel test ( which measures whether two female characters have a conversation other than a man) were better at the box office than those which failed the test, the New York Times reported quoting the study. "The perception that it's not good business to have female leads is not true. They're a marketing asset," said Christy Haubegger, a C.A.A. agent who was part of the research team.
