IWPC hosts open house to discuss rising sexual harassment incidents

In the wake of the the #MeToo movement, the Indian Women's Press Corps held an open house discussion Friday on the increasing instances of sexual harassment of women and the threat of defamation suits faced by complainants. T K Rajalakshmi, senior journalist and president of the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), said a report and final decisions taken at the discussion will be forwarded to the Group of Ministers (GoM) that was constituted last month by the government to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks to deal with and prevent sexual harassment at workplaces. The queries at the discussion were addressed by Supreme Court advocate Kirti Singh. Some of the takeaways of the discussion were strengthening of the POSH (The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act and doing away of criminal defamation. Muslim group opposes film on Ayodhya, writes to Censor Board

A Muslim organisation in Maharashtra has opposed the release of a Hindi film on the Ayodhya issue and urged the Censor Board to withhold clearance, saying it is intended to create hatred in the society. The film, "Ram Janmbhoomi", has been written and produced by Shia Waqf Board chairman Syed Waseem Rizvi. Rizvi had released the trailer of the film, which chronicles the events during the Ram Temple movement since October 30, 1990. The Maharashtra Muslim Awami Committee (MMCA) has taken strong objection to the release of the trailer, saying the film deals with a subject which is sub-judice (the Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid case is in the Supreme Court). Star trumpeter Maalouf convicted over schoolgirl sex assault

Star trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, famed for his award-winning film soundtracks and mixing of eastern and western sounds, was handed a suspended prison sentence for sexual assault on Friday by a French court. Maalouf, 37, was found guilty of assaulting a 14-year-old schoolgirl who was doing work experience at his music studio in a suburb southeast of Paris in 2013. The girl, now aged 19, testified in court that he had kissed her and grabbed her without her consent. Maalouf denied the allegations and portrayed her as an infatuated fan who was bitter after being rejected. The court in Creteil, a southeastern suburb of Paris, handed him a 20,000-euro ($23,000) fine as well as the suspended prison term.
