Malayali author Benyamin has bagged the inaugural JCB Prize for literature for his book "Jasmine Days", which explores the lives of South Asians in the Middle East. Benyamin's book, originally written in Malayalam and translated by Shahnaz Habib, is a "brilliant and intense novel", jury chairperson Vivek Shanbag said Wednesday night while announcing the most expensive literary award in the country. Director Richard Linklater has set up the biopic of comedian Bill Hicks as his next project. The 58-year-old filmmaker, best known for critically acclaimed films such as "Before" trilogy, "Dazed and Confused" and "Boyhood", will write and direct the new feature for Focus Features, reported Indiewire. Hicks was raised as a Southern Baptist and began performing comedy in the late 1970s in Texas. He toured extensively during the 1980s, achieving widespread success for his act, which used dark comedy to tackle social issues of the day. The comedian died from pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. Linklater is an avowed fan of Hicks, and shares a similar Southern Baptist upbringing. Eugene Smith in upcoming thriller movie 'Minamata'.The film is based on the novel of the same name authored by Aileen Mioko Smith, and is being helmed by Andrew Levitas of 'Lullaby' fame, Deadline reported.The plotline of the film follows the story of World War II photographer Eugene Smith on his way to Japan in the 1970s to document the Minamata disease scandal, wherein a chemical company was responsible in affecting a coastal community.Levitas, in a statement, said that it was a privilege to work on a project about someone like Smith. He added that this project is important as it is an attempt to give voice to those "who have been silently suffering".The production team has already spent time in Minamata, Japan, meeting some of the victims and their families.
