The Women and Child Development Ministry will constitute a panel of legal experts to look into the allegations of sexual harassment that have surfaced in the #MeToo campaign, a senior official said Monday. The committee will look into the legal and institutional framework in place for handling complaints of sexual harassment, including some of the complaints if required, and advise the ministry on how to strengthen these, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi had said last Friday. "The formal order of constitution of the committee will be given in a couple of days," a senior WCD official said. : As the #MeToo storm rages in India with personalities from arts and politics being accused of sexual harassment by many women, actor-politician Kamal Haasan Monday said the cinema industry should not be singled out on this matter. When such charges are being levelled, both sides should be heard for their versions, he said. "Don't single out the cinema industry. We have to understand it (sexual harassment) is prevalent in all fields," he told reporters at the airport here. The Malayalam Actors' body AMMA Monday accused 'Women in Cinema Collective' of making "childish" allegations against its members on the abduction and molestation of an actress here last year. AMMA secretary Siddique and senior member KPAC Lalitha said Dileep, an accused in the case, has resigned from the organisation and the resignation letter has been handed over to its president Mohanlal on October 10. The WCC, an outfit of women in the Malayalam film industry, has slammed AMMA for allegedly showing "bias" against the young actress who was abducted and molested in her car in Kochi last year. IFTDA sends notice to Sajid Khan over sexual harassment allegations
Indian Film & Television Directors' Association issued a notice to director Sajid Khan Monday following allegations of sexual harassment against him by three women. In a letter to Sajid, IFTDA has demanded an explanation from the director for his alleged offensive behaviour within seven days. "Your lewd and obscene actions have brought disrepute to Indian Film and Television Directors' Association. "We, therefore, want an explanation from you for such offensive behaviour within seven days of receipt of the notice for further action as per the rules and regulations," said the letter, signed by IFTDA president Ashoke Pandit. In case of no reply, the letter stated, ex-parte decision would be taken. Sajid has been accused of sexual harassment by actors Saloni Chopra and Rachel White and journalist Karishma Upadhyay. Following the allegations, Sajid stepped down as the director of "Housefull 4". He has been replaced by Farhad Samji.
Alok Nath files Re 1 defamation suit against Vinta Nanda
Bollywood actor Alok Nath on Monday filed a civil suit in a court here against writer-director Vinta Nanda in connection with her rape accusations against him, and sought Re 1 as damages for allegedly defaming him. Alok Nath's wife Ashu, meanwhile, recorded her statement before a magistrate in connection with her complaint against Nanda and sought that defamation proceedings be initiated against the writer-director.
