Turkey to send 'The Wild Pear Tree' to Oscars

Turkey on Friday chose the film 'The Wild Pear Tree' to be submitted in the 'Best foreign language' category for the 91st Academy Awards, set to be held next year.According to the Hollywood Reporter, the storyline of the movie revolves around a young writer, who struggles to accumulate money to publish his novel.The film, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year, is the Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's first official submission at the Oscars. The director is well known for winning Palme d'Or for his film 'Winter Sleep' in 2014, and the 'best director prize' at Cannes for 'Three Monkeys' in 2008.'The Wild Pear Tree' is an international co-production.

Thomas Mann to join 'Lady and the Tramp'

Hollywood actor Thomas Mann is set to join upcoming movie 'Lady and the Tramp'. According to Variety, in Disney's live-action adaptation, Mann will be seen portraying the role of Lady's human owner, Jim Dear.The movie talks about an American Cocker Spaniel named 'Lady' who resides with a family, but is led astray when a baby is born. After being abandoned by the family, Lady meets a stray dog, the Tramp and falls in love.The 'Kong: Skull Island' actor is set to join Tessa Thompson of 'Thor: Ragnarok' fame, who will lend her voice to the character of Lady. Also onboard is Justin Theroux, who will lend his voice for the Tramp, while Kiersey Clemons will play Mann's wife.Similar to 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Jungle Book', the majority of the film's cast will voice CGI characters, except for Mann and Clemons' characters.

USA Orders Jason Bourne-universe series 'Treadstone'

USA Network has given a series order to "Treadstone", a show based in the Jason Bourne universe. The studio had ordered a pilot for the series in April this year and now it has greenlit the project, reported Variety. It will follow fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne, which played by actor Matt Damon in four films. The covert program uses behaviour modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season of the series will follow sleeper agents across the globe as they are mysteriously "awakened" to resume their deadly missions. The series is expected to go into production next year.

Assamese movie streaming portal 'Movietonne' launched

Movietonne, an online platform to stream Assamese and regional films, was launched today with a platter of 16 different flicks. "The biggest problem of Assamese films is that lack of space and time for screen. People want to watch these films, but they cannot due to very few number of halls and onslaught of outside films. Movietonne is trying to address that," Movietonne's Manas Pratim Kalita and Spandan Keot said in their joint presentation on the launch. Movietonne is an online film streaming platform, where for the first time old and new Assamese films will be available for a minimum amount of Rs 40 only, they added. "In the troubling times of Assamese cinema, we want to give come respite to the filmmakers. Movietonne will work for publicity, expansion and preservation of Assamese as well as other regional cinemas," the duo said. Artistes demand payment of dues, no shooting for a day

Shooting of Bengali soaps came to a standstill in various city studios today in response to a ceasework call by the Artist's Forum demanding regularisation of their payment. Forum General Secretary and actor Arindam Ganguly said, actors arrived on the call time, put up costumes and make-up required for the shoot but refrained from taking part in the shootings on the floor. "We demand an early solution to the issue of outstanding payments of several serial artistes which had been uncleared for months," Ganguly said. A serial actress said the ceasework call was given by the Forum in a whatsapp message signed by Arindam Ganguly and actor Prosenjit Chatterjee yesterday night. Chatterjee who visited a studio said he was hopeful of a breakthrough. A spokesman of the producers said talks were on to resolve the issue and they were hopeful of an early breakthrough. HBO gives series order to 'Watchmen'

HBO's first-ever superhero series 'Watchmen" has received a series order. The project is based on the characters from the DC Comics property and will be developed by writer Damon Lindelof. The series, however, will not be a straight adaption of Alan Moore's graphic novel, previously translated for 2009 film by Zack Snyder. The studio also unveiled a star-studded cast for the series which includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr and others. Netflix deletes user reviews from its website

Netflix has removed all the user reviews submitted for TV shows, movies from its website as a part of the company's decision.The company began notifying its subscribers of the move last month. The users could only post reviews up until July 30. The company also added that it would remove all existing reviews by mid-August, reported Variety.Netflix indicated that they decided to do away with the feature in response to a drop in the number of users submitting reviews. But removing reviews will no doubt impact users, who rely on members' opinions to find new shows to watch.
