Centre to develop Rs 343-crore eco park in Badarpur

Delhiites will get to experience wildlife safari soon, with the central government Thursday saying a city forest or eco park will be developed at the closed site of Badarpur Thermal Power Station at a cost of Rs 343 crore. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the city forest will be provided with unique herbivore and carnivore safari. Talking to reporters here, Puri said the ecological project will be spread across 884 at the closed site of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Badarpur. According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, the NTPC power plant is closed since October 15, 2018. "The city forest or eco park will be developed in 24 months," Puri said. Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice-Chairman Tarun Kapoor said the NTPC will develop an eco-park on its area, which will be handed over to an appropriate agency in consultation with the ministry after development. Govt clears Rs 31K cr for power projects, approves policy on hydro, stressed assets

The government has cleared investment of around Rs 31,560 crore in four power projects of total 3,760 MW generation capacity and approved two policies to boost hydro power as well as revive stressed assets in the sector, Union Power Minister R K Singh said Thursday. However, Singh admitted that two recommendations of a high level committee (HLC) regarding payment security mechanism for private power producers and gas-based stressed assets were not approved by the Union Cabinet on Thursday, saying a lot of ground is to be covered for implementing those suggestions. The HLC had suggested that bills of discoms towards generators can be discounted by the financial institution. "The government today approved investment for four power projects and two policies on hydro power and stressed power assets," Singh told reporters. Only one musk deer in India's zoos, reveals RTI reply

Only one musk deer is present across zoos in the country, according to a response obtained under the Right to Information Act. The Central Zoo Authority, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoECC), stated that the lone male musk deer was in a zoo in Himachal Pradesh. A Noida-based RTI activist had sought details on the population of musk deers across states in the country, both in zoos as well as in the wild. He had also asked statistics related to the poaching of the wild species, if any. "There is only single male musk deer (that) exists in recognized zoo (Himalayan Nature Park, Kufri as on 31.03.2018)," said the Central Zoo Authority, which maintains the records of captive animals in zoos. There are seven musk deer species of the genus Moschus and all of them are endemic to Asia. A 'majboot' government put metro rail on fast track: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday metro connectivity in the country has expanded by 400 km since 2014 when a "strong" government took charge at the Centre. He said work on 800 km of metro lines is currently in progress in different parts of the country, adding projects of rapid transport system have created employment opportunities. The PM said it was the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government which conceived the metro rail project to deal with traffic woes in cities. He was addressing a gathering via video conferencing after inaugurating the 13.5 km first phase of Nagpur Metro connecting Khapri-Sitaburdi areas in the city. UK targets surge in offshore wind power

Britain wants offshore wind farms to provide one third of the country's electricity by 2030, the government announced Thursday, at a time when its nuclear energy ambitions are stumbling. Working with the private sector to take advantage of the island nation's surrounding waters to power homes and businesses with increasing amounts of renewable energy, the government said the Offshore Wind Sector Deal will slash the UK's reliance on fossil fuels. Offshore wind currently provides about seven percent of British electricity. The new initiative "will drive a surge in the clean, green offshore wind revolution... bringing investment into coastal communities and ensuring we maintain our position as global leaders in this growing sector", Claire Perry, Britain's energy and clean growth minister, said in a statement. Leopard drags away 12-year-old girl from outside house in UP, mauls her to death

A 12-year-old girl was dragged away from outside her house in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district and mauled to death by a leopard, officials said Thursday. The incident happened in Majhar village in Kakraha range on Wednesday evening, when Rinki was cutting grass outside her house. The area comes under the Katarniyaghat Wildlife Sanctury. Late in the night her body was found from a nearby field. The body has been sent for postmortem examination, officials said. A Revenue Department team led by Tehsildar Keshav Ram visited the site this morning. Officials said a Forest Department team is being deployed to locate and catch the leopard.
