Govt to revamp tunnel construction SOPs to prevent Silkyara like mishaps

The government on Friday said it will revamp the standard operating procedures for tunnel construction after an expert panel found many shortcomings in the under-construction Silkyara tunnel, which collapsed in November last year, leaving 41 workers stranded for more than two weeks. At a press briefing, Road Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain said the Silkyara tunnel project in Uttarkashi is still workable, and the government will not abandon it. An experts' panel to investigate the collapse of a portion of the under-construction Silkyara tunnel has pointed out many shortcomings in the project, he added. "Silkyara tunnel collapse se humne kaafi kuch seekha hai (We have learnt a lot from the collapse of the under-construction Silkyara tunnel)," he said. A total of 41 workers were trapped after a portion of the under-construction tunnel collapsed on November 12 and the workers were rescued on November 28. Eighth round of commercial coal mines auction received great response: Govt

The eighth tranche of commercial coal mine auctions has received an overwhelming response from the industry, the government said on Friday. The last date for submission of bids for the eighth round is January 29. "The ongoing 8th round has witnessed an overwhelming response from the industry, which is evident from the fact that a lot of queries have been received from a number of bidders along with several site-visit requests," the coal ministry said in a statement. The bids received in this tranche will be opened on January 30 in the presence of the bidders. In the eighth round, 39 coal mines have been offered, the ministry said. The round was launched on November 15, 2023 by Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi. The pre-bid meeting for the round was held on December 12 and more than 50 bidders had participated in it.

Govt has taken slew of initiatives for infrastructure development: Official

The government has taken a slew of initiatives for infrastructure development as it has a strong multiplier effect and plays pivotal role in the country's development, Financial Services Additional Secretary M P Tangirala said on Friday. Speaking at the 19th Foundation Day of the India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL), he said infrastructure sector has strong backward and forward linkages. To support the sector, he said the government has taken slew of initiatives, including the USD 1.3 trillion-PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) that has been front runner in bringing about systemic and effective reforms in this sector. Launched in 2021, the PM Gati Shakti targets to cut logistic costs, increase cargo handling capacity and reduce the turnaround time. Another initiative is the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) that was started with 6,800 projects and now, there are over 9,000 projects across 34 sub-sectors, he said. IIFCL plans to launch IPO in next financial year, unlock value for govt: MD

State-owned India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) plans to go public in the next financial year, company's Managing Director P R Jaishankar said on Friday. "We are examining the listing...hopefully it should be done next financial year. IIFCL has come to a stage where we unlock the value for the benefit of the government," he said on the sidelines of the company's foundation day. The company will very soon initiate the consultation process, he said, adding various approvals are required including from the government. Asked about the quantum of stake dilution, he said, the decision about that would be taken after detailed discussion. As of now, IIFCL is 100 per cent owned by Government of India. Govt makes air-conditioned truck cabin for drivers mandatory from Oct 2025

All new trucks manufactured on or after October 1, 2025, must be equipped with AC cabins for drivers, as the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has issued a notification for mandating air-conditioned truck cabins. In a gazette notification, the ministry has said, "...the vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2025, shall be fitted with an air-conditioning system for the cabin of vehicles of N2 and N3 category". The testing of the cabin fitted with an air-conditioning system shall be as per IS14618:2022, it added. In July, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said the draft notification to mandate the installation of air-conditioning systems in the cabins of trucks has been approved. Recently, the minister said that truck drivers play a key role in the transport sector, one of the most important areas for India, and there is a need to address issues regarding their working conditions and state of mind.
