Dancing may help older women maintain their ability to perform daily tasks, according to a study. The research, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, examined the potential effects of 16 different exercise types for reducing disability for activities of daily living (ADL) in older women. Researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology in Japan enrolled 1,003 community-dwelling older Japanese women without ADL disability at the start. In the baseline survey, all participants were asked whether or not they participated in any of 16 exercise types through a face-to-face interview. ADL disability during eight years of follow-up was defined as dependence in at least one ADL task (walking, eating, bathing, dressing, or toileting). ADL disability was noted in 130 participants (13 per cent) during follow-up. Participation in dancing, compared with non-participation, was associated with a 73 per cent significantly lower likelihood for developing ...

Mindfulness training may improve the effectiveness of intensive weight management programmes, helping people shed the extras kilos more effectively, scientists say. The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, suggests that it could be an excellent strategy for healthcare providers in preventing and managing obesity. Individuals who participated in mindfulness training as part of an intensive weight management programme lost more weight in six months than other programme participants who did not attend mindfulness courses. Mindfulness is a mind-body practice where individuals learn to achieve heightened awareness of their current state of mind and immediate environment in the present moment. The study looked at how this practice could be used to help individuals with obesity. Obesity worldwide has nearly tripled since 1975, according to the World Health Organisation. As of 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults worldwide met the criteria for ...
Exposure to cannabis may trigger structural and regulatory changes in the DNA of users' sperm, a study warns. Researchers from Duke University Medical Center in the US suggest men in their child-bearing years should consider how tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) could impact their sperm and possibly the children they conceive. Like previous research that showed tobacco smoke, pesticides, flame retardants and even obesity can alter sperm, the study shows THC also affects epigenetics, triggering structural and regulatory changes in the DNA of users' sperm. Experiments in rats and a study with 24 men found that THC appears to target genes in two major cellular pathways and alters DNA methylation, a process essential to normal development, according to the study published in the journal Epigenetics. The researchers do not yet know whether DNA changes triggered by THC are passed to users' children and what effects that could have. "What we have found is that the effects of cannabis use on males .
Exercise may be as effective as taking prescribed drugs to tackle high blood pressure, a study claims. However, the researchers from the London School of Economics and Political Science in the UK caution patients against giving up their blood pressure lowering drugs in favour of an exercise regimen yet. The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggests that patients should boost their physical activity levels, alongside their medication. Exercise can lower systolic blood pressure -- the amount of pressure in the arteries when the heart is beating and expressed as the top number in any blood pressure reading. However, how exercise compares with blood pressure lowering drugs, is not clear. To get round this, the researchers pooled the data from 194 clinical trials looking at the impact of drugs on lowering systolic blood pressure and 197 trials looking at the impact of structured exercise, and involving a total of 39,742 people. Structured exercise was categorised

Contrary to popular belief, aggressive behaviour brings emotional pain to sadists, a recent study has observed.People with sadistic personality traits tend to be aggressive, but only enjoy their aggressive acts if it harms their victims. However, according to a series of studies conducted on 2000 people, these actions ultimately leave sadists feeling worse than they felt before their actions."Sadistic tendencies don't just exist in serial killers, but in everyday people and are strongly-linked to greater aggressive behaviour," said David Chester, lead author of the study which is published in the Journal of Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In the real world, a sadist might be someone bullying others to feel better, or a group of sports fans looking for rival fans to fight for the "excitement" of it.In a lab setting, as part of the study, the scientists gauged people's aggressive and sadistic tendencies by measuring participant's likelihood to seek vengeance or to harm an .
Inculcating severe food restrictions can lead to binge-eating disorder and obesity, a new study has found. It is important to examine potential links between binge-eating disorder and food insecurity, as binge-eating is associated with more severe mental and physical health problems than overeating or obesity alone. To investigate, researchers surveyed 1,250 adults in the United States and categorised them into three groups: healthy weight, binge-eating disorder, and obesity. The team assessed financial influences on participants' food consumption behaviours over a span of 12 months. As part of the study, which was published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, a greater proportion of individuals within the binge-eating disorder and obesity groups reported that they cut the size of their meal or skipped meals, and ate less than they thought they should, relative to participants in the healthy weight group."This is an important study because it expands our view as to who ...

A diet of fast food, cakes and processed meat may significantly increase risk of depression, a study has found. Researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK found that eating foods which are known to promote inflammation -- such as those high in cholesterol, saturated fats and carbohydrates -- puts people at 40 per cent higher risk of depression. The team analysed data from 11 existing studies that focused on the link between depression and pro-inflammatory diets -- encompassing more than 100,000 participants, between 16 to 72 years old, of varied gender and ethnicity, spanning the USA, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. All the studies recorded the presence of depression or depressive symptoms in the participants -- through self-observation, medical diagnoses and antidepressant use --alongside a detailed questionnaire about the contents of their diet. Each participant was assigned a score of how inflammatory his or her diet is, according to the dietary ...
Bones of children born in the most recent century reach full maturity earlier than it used to before, a new study has found.Today's children have bones that reach full maturity earlier - by nearly 10 months in girls and nearly seven months in boys, the study suggests."Our findings show there is a "new normal" for timing when kids' skeletons will reach full maturity," said Dana Duren, lead author of the research. As part of the study published in the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, the research team, led by Duren, assessed the radiographs of more than 1,000 children born between 1915 and 2006. The team evaluated radiographs of the bones in the hands and wrists to determine the precise timing of the beginning and end of a developmental process called epiphyseal fusion."We focused on epiphyseal fusion because it signals the end of the growth of the bone. It begins when the growth plate, which is cartilage at the end of the bone, starts to connect the epiphysis, or ..
