Researchers from the University of Aberdeen in the UK found that regularly doing problem solving throughout your lifetime does not prevent mental decline in later life. The study, published in The BMJ, suggests that regularly engaging in intellectual activities boosts mental ability throughout life and provides a "higher cognitive point" from which to decline. Previous studies have suggested that mental ability can be maintained or improved by exercising the mind in brain teasers such as Sudoku and crossword puzzles. They also suggest that reading from an early age, playing board games and playing musical instruments at least twice a week is linked with significantly reducing the risk for dementia, researchers said. However, there is a lack of historical childhood mental ability data, and the effect of practice on improving test scores has often been ..

Eyes may help measure stress, mental workload

Our eyes could serve as a window to how stressed we are, say scientists who found that pupil dilation can be used to indicate the mental workload of a person when they multitask. The demands of work productivity in today's society seem to have increased tenfold. Workers have to multitask to cope with the insistence that tasks be completed almost immediately. Previous studies on workload and productivity include physical aspects, such as how much a person walks or carries, but they do not take into account a person's state of mind. "If your vitals are bad, then something is wrong with your body and doctors will work to figure out what's wrong with you," said Jung Hyup Kim, an assistant professor at University of Missouri-Columbia in the US. "Many people multitask, but currently there is no measurement for someone's mental well-being. However, we found that the size of a pupil could be the key to measuring someone's mental state while they multitask," Kim said. Everyone experiences ...

Regular flu shots may help save heart failure patients: Study

Getting an annual flu shot may reduce the risk of premature death among newly-diagnosed heart failure patients, a study has claimed. Influenza can be very serious or even fatal for patients with heart failure because they are often older than 65, have compromised circulation and other health complications, and infection may exacerbate the symptoms. Researcher from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark analysed data on 134,048 patients with newly diagnosed heart failure over a 12-year period. Flu vaccination rates ranged from 16 per cent in 2003 to 52 per cent in 2015 with a peak of 54 per cent in 2009, according to the study published in the journal Circulation. The study found that flu vaccination was associated with an 18 per cent reduced risk of premature death, even after accounting for other factors such as medications, other health conditions, income and education. Annual flu vaccination following a heart failure diagnosis was associated with a 19 per cent reduction in both ...
