Study links inflammatory bowel disease to prostate cancer

Inflammatory bowel disease increases the risk of prostate cancer by four-to-five times, according to a study. The findings appear in the journal European Urology. The 20-year study from Northwestern Medicine is the first report to show men with inflammatory bowel disease have higher than average PSA (prostate-specific antigen) values, and this group also has a significantly higher risk of potentially dangerous prostate cancer.Inflammatory bowel disease is a common chronic condition that includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. "These patients may need to be screened more carefully than a man without inflammatory bowel disease," said lead study author Dr. Shilajit Kundu. "If a man with inflammatory bowel disease has an elevated PSA, it may be an indicator of prostate cancer."In his practice, Kundu sees many men with inflammatory bowel disease who have elevated PSA tests."Many doctors think their PSA is elevated just because they have an inflammatory condition," Kundu added. ...

Doctor treating homosexuals with electric shock summoned by Delhi court

A doctor, who terms homosexuality as "genetic mental disorder" and uses electric shock to treat gay and lesbian people, has been summoned by a Delhi court as an accused for violating norms. Though Dr P K Gupta was de-barred by the Delhi Medical Council (DMC), he was still indulging in this bizarre practice. The court took note of a complaint against Gupta by the DMC, which claimed that he was using hormonal and shock therapy to provide treatment. The complaint said the DMC had debarred Gupta in 2016 from practising in Delhi and as he was still projecting himself as a doctor, he was liable for prosecution. Metropolitan magistrate Abhilash Malhotra said treatment given by doctors as a part of "conversion therapy" was not recognised either by medical science or by legislature. Conversion therapy is an attempt to change a person's sexual orientation using psychological or spiritual interventions. The court summoned the doctor as accused saying he was prima facie found to be contravening a

Parrot genome reveals insights into longevity, cognition

Scientists have sequenced the genome of the blue-fronted Amazon parrot, unveiling new insights into longevity and highly developed cognitive abilities that give the talkative birds so much in common with humans. The first comparative study of parrot genome by researchers from the Carnegie Mellon University in the US will also provide clues about how parrots learn to vocalise so well. By comparing the blue-fronted Amazon with 30 other long- and short-lived birds -- including four additional parrot species -- the researchers identified a suite of genes previously not known to play a role in longevity that deserves further study. They also identified genes associated with longevity in fruit flies and worms. "In many cases, this is the first time we've connected those genes to longevity in vertebrates," said Morgan Wirthlin, a post-doctoral fellow in Carnegie Mellon University. Parrots are known to live up to 90 years in captivity -- a lifespan that would be equivalent to hundreds of ...

Sleeping too much can lead to death!

Turns out, sleeping more than six to eight hours a night is associated with an increased risk of death and cardiovascular diseases.According to a recent study at the McMaster and Peking Union Medical College, people sleeping more than the recommended upper limit of eight hours increased their risk of major cardiovascular events, like stroke or heart failure, as well as death by up to 41 per cent. But a possible reason for this could be that people have underlying conditions causing them to sleep longer, which in turn could raise the risk of cardiovascular disease or death, explained the authors of the study. The findings of the study appeared in the Journal of European Heart. The team also identified a rising risk among daytime nappers."Daytime napping was associated with increased risks of major cardiovascular events and deaths in those with [more than] six hours of nighttime sleep but not in those sleeping [less than] 6 hours a night," said Chuangshi Wang, a researcher.People who under

New estimates of disability among India's elderly population show that the scale of the problem is much larger than suggested by the country's national census, a study has found. The estimates are based on the ability to carry out three basic living activities -- walking, dressing, and toileting, said researchers from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. The study found that 17.91 per cent of males and 26.21 per cent of females aged 60 and above, experience disability in these areas, equating to nine million elderly men and 14 million elderly women. The most recent census, from 2011, suggests that just five per cent of the elderly population suffer from a disability, researchers said. The prevalence of disability is much higher among widowed women, and among the poor and illiterate, they said. Nandita Saikia from IIASA and Mukesh Parmar from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi also found a statistically significant connection between ...

Targeted cognitive training beneficial for patients with schizophrenia

According to a recent study, targeted cognitive training (TCT) may benefit people with severe schizophrenia. The study was published in the journal 'Schizophrenia Research'. Schizophrenia is among the most difficult mental illnesses to treat, in part because it is characterized by a wide range of dysfunction, from hallucinations and mood disorders to cognitive impairment, especially verbal and working memory, which can be explained in part by abnormalities in early auditory information processing. In recent years, TCT has emerged as a promising therapeutic intervention. TCT uses computerized training, such as sophisticated brain games, to target specific neural pathways, such as memory, learning and auditory-based senses, to beneficially alter the way they process information. But while TCT has proven effective for mild to moderate forms of schizophrenia under carefully controlled conditions, it remains unclear whether the approach might benefit patients with chronic, refractory ...
