Infertility duration may affect sperm count

According to a research, a longer duration of infertility leads to lower sperm count and other parameters of impaired sperm production in infertile men.The researchers at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele stated that despite regular sexual intercourse, approximately 15 per cent of couples to fail to achieve a wanted pregnancy within a 12-month period. The findings appeared in the Journal of Epilepsia."The results suggest that the duration of infertility should be considered a potential risk factor for impaired sperm parameters in infertile men. Also, infertile couples should be made aware of the associations found in this study," said the lead author of the study, Luca Boeri.Prolonged infertility has generally been considered as a psycho-social stress that may lead to poor marital adjustment for an infertile couple and decrease their quality of life.Older age and higher body mass index are other factors which affect the duration of infertility in men..

Excess or poor sleep may up heart disease, early death risk

Too much or too little sleep can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and early death, according to a study of over 116,000 people from across the world published Wednesday. The researchers found that people who slept for longer than the recommended duration of six to eight hours a day had an increased risk of early death or developing diseases of the heart or blood vessels in the brain. Compared to people who slept for the recommended time, those who slept a total of eight to nine hours a day had a 5 per cent increased risk; people sleeping between nine and ten hours a day had an increased risk of 17 per cent and those sleeping more than ten hours a day had a 41 per cent increased risk. They also found a nine per cent increased risk for people who slept a total of six or fewer hours, but this finding was not statistically significant. Before adjusting for factors that might affect the results, the researchers found that for every 1,000 people sleeping six or fewer hours a ...

Single workout can boost metabolism for days: Study

Neurons that influence metabolism are active for up to two days after a single workout, according to a study in mice. The study, published in the journal Molecular Metabolism, offers new insight into the brain's potential role in fitness and may provide a target for developing therapies that improve metabolism. "It doesn't take much exercise to alter the activity of these neurons," said Kevin Williams from the University of Texas in the US. "Based on our results, we would predict that getting out and exercising even once in a semi-intense manner can reap benefits that can last for days, in particular with respect to glucose metabolism," Williams said. Researchers measured the effects of short- and long-term exercise on two types of neurons that comprise the melanocortin brain circuit, which is shared by both humans and mice. One of the neuron types (POMC) is associated with reduced appetite, lower blood glucose levels, and higher energy burning when activated, researchers said. The ...

Bariatric Support Group Trek - A Unique Initiative of 'Aastha Health Care'

/ -- Support group meetings play a very important role after any Bariatric Surgery. Support group meetings need to be informative, get people involved and at the same time should create a value and play a role in the weight loss journey of an operated patient. At 'Aastha Health Care', Support Group meetings have been organised month after month to support our patients post Bariatric Surgery. This time, Support group meeting theme was a Trek, an outdoor physical activity, to go through the rough terrains, to go uphill on a Sunday morning. Usually, trek is done by professionals or by those who would like to experience this as a picnic, but for those who could not walk a few steps without being breathless because of obesity, it was a challenge. This challenge was well accepted by almost 125 of our operated Bariatric Surgery patients and accomplished with finesse and determination . World's first baby born via womb transplant from deceased donor

In a world-first, a Brazilian woman who received a womb transplant from a deceased donor, has successfully given birth to a baby girl, according to a case report published in The Lancet journal. The report shows that uterus transplants from deceased donors are feasible and may open access for all women with uterine infertility, without the need for live donors. Currently, uterus donation is only available for women with family members who are willing to donate. "The use of deceased donors could greatly broaden access to this treatment, and our results provide proof-of-concept for a new option for women with uterine infertility," said Dani Ejzenberg, from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, who led the research. The recipient of the transplant was a patient with uterine infertility. This was the first uterine transplantation in Latin America. Previously, there have been 10 other uterus transplants from deceased donors attempted in the US, Czech Republic and Turkey, but this is the first

No link between fish oil and perioperative bleeding

A recent study has stated that fish oil - which contains the omega-3s (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) - has no impact on perioperative (time period of surgical procedure) bleeding in surgery patients. The findings appear in the journal Circulation. The researchers, on the other hand, stated that higher blood omega-3 levels were associated with lower risk of bleeding. To explore the question of whether high-dose EPA+DHA supplementation affects the risk for bleeding in surgery patients, researchers conducted a secondary analysis of the Omega-3 fatty acids for the PrEvention of post-opeRative Atrial fibrillation (OPERA) study. For this study, 1516 patients scheduled for cardiac surgery were randomized to omega-3s or placebo. The dose was 6.5-8 grams of EPA+DHA over 2 to 5 days before surgery, and then 1.7 grams per day beginning on the morning of surgery and continuing until discharge. There was no effect of omega-3 treatment on the primary outcome (post-op atrial ...

New Zika vaccine effective in animal trials

Scientists have developed a vaccine candidate for the Zika virus which they say successfully protected both mice and monkeys from the infection that causes brain deformations in human babies. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the vaccine candidate in monkeys (non-human primates) is an important milestone because it typically predicts the vaccine will work in humans, enabling further clinical development, researchers at the University of Hawaii in the US said. A strong global initiative to battle Zika has produced more than 30 vaccine candidates since outbreaks in 2015-2016 in Brazil linked the infection in some pregnant women to severe birth defects such as microcephaly in their newborns. Zika is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes and through sex. There is no treatment or cure for Zika virus infection nor is any vaccine currently approved for public use. The proposed vaccine, reported in the journals Frontiers in Immunology and mSphere, uses a protein of the Zika virus, ...

Why people feel urge to squeeze cute puppies, babies

Scientists have analysed brain activity to better understand why people experience 'cute aggression' -- the urge to squeeze a puppy or pinch a baby's cheeks. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioural Neuroscience, found that when people are overwhelmed by cuteness, the brain's reward system responds with aggression. Until now, research exploring how and why cute aggression occurs has been the domain of behavioral psychology, said Katherine Stavropoulos, an assistant professor at the University of California (UC) Riverside in the US. However, Stavropoulos has taken formal study of the phenomenon a few steps further. In her research, Stavropoulos uses electrophysiology to evaluate surface-level electrical activity that arises from neurons firing in people's brains. By studying that activity, she gauges neural responses to a range of external stimuli. Stavropoulos wondered whether there was a neural component to cute aggression. She hypothesised that the brains of ...
