Lesbian, gay, bisexual students at higher risk of self-harm

Students who are lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) are at a higher risk of self-harm when compared to heterosexual individuals, a recent study suggests.The research also shows that low self-esteem may explain the increased risk of self-harm in LGB students. Self-harm typically includes behaviour such as cutting, hair pulling, scratching, burning or non-lethal overdoses."Young people's mental health is a national concern and this study confirms that lesbian, gay or bisexual young people have elevated rates of suicidality and self-harm compared with heterosexual youth. Lung disease associated with dementia in later life

According to a recent study, lung disease in middle age could be a risk factor for dementia or cognitive impairment later in life.The findings have been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.Lead author Pamela L Lutsey of the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, and a group of researchers report that both restrictive and obstructive lung diseases were associated with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and with mild cognitive impairment. Nawaz Sharif anxious about brother's cancer scare

Granules gets USFDA nod for narcolepsy treatment drug

Drug firm Granules India Tuesday said its subsidiary has received approval from the US health regulator for Methylphenidate Hydrochloride extended-release tablets used in the treatment of a sleep disorder called narcolepsy. The US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) has approved the abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) filed by Granules Pharmaceuticals, Inc, subsidiary of Granules India Ltd, through its US agent First Time US Generics LLC, for Methylphenidate Hydrochloride extended-release tablets USP, 10 mg and 20 mg, Granules India said in a filing to BSE. The approved product is the therapeutic equivalent of the reference listed drug Ritalin SR sustained-release tablets 20 mg of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, it added. The company said Granules Pharmaceuticals Inc shall market and distribute the product shortly. Shares of Granules India were trading at Rs 90 apiece, down 0.61 per cent from previous close, on BSE.

Alembic Pharma gets USFDA nod for insomnia treatment drug

Drug firm Alembic Pharmaceuticals has received approval from the US health regulator for Temazepam capsules, used for treatment of insomnia. The company has got approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to market the drug in the strength of 7.5mg, 15mg, 22.5mg and 40mg, Alembic Pharmaceuticals said in a BSE filing. The approved abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) is the therapeutic equivalent to the reference listed drug product (RLD) Restoril Capsules. Quoting IQVIA sales data, the company said, Temazepam capsules 7.5mg, 15mg, 22.5mg and 40mg had an estimated market size of USD 48 million for 12 months, ending December 2017. The company's stock was trading at Rs 567 apiece, up 1.33 per cent, on the BSE.

A national festival for children living in Child Care Institutions (CCIs) was launched Monday to provide them a platform to showcase their skills and realise their hidden talents, Women and Child Development Secretary Rakesh Srivastava said. The four-day festival, 'Hausla 2018', of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) was inaugurated by Srivastava here. Congo starts first-ever trial testing Ebola drugs

Congo has begun the first-ever trial to test the effectiveness and safety of four experimental Ebola drugs, the first time scientists have directly compared such treatments, the World Health Organisation said Monday. The UN health agency described the multi-drug trial as "a giant step" that would "bring clarity about what works best." "While our focus remains on bringing this outbreak to an end, the launch of the randomized control trial in DRC (Congo) is an important step toward finally finding an Ebola treatment that will save lives," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Brewhouse Ice Tea secures $2 mn loan from Singapore's Food Empire Group

Bottled ice tea brand Brewhouse Ice Tea Monday said it has secured USD 2 million loan from Singapore-based FMCG firm Food Empire Group to expand its footprint and product offerings. Food Empire Group had previously invested USD 6,00,000 in Positive Food Ventures in November 2017. Positive Food Venture Pvt Ltd, maker of bottled ice tea brand Brewhouse, has secured a loan of USD 2 million from Food Empire Holdings, the company said in a statement. "Currently, we are present at over 2,000 points of sale in major cities and are expanding our operation pan India. Nurses launch indefinite strike at GMCH and JMCH

The All Assam Nurses Association (AANA) launched an indefinite strike from Monday in the premises of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) demanding 'same post same salary'. GMCH Superintendent Dr R Talukdar said, "no nursing service in the hospital has been allowed to be affected. Layered service of nurses have been engaged". Talukdar and JMCH PRO Dr Nilotpal Bhattacharjee said nurses and faculty from the Regional Nursing Colleges attached to both the Medical Colleges, nursing supervisors and nurses undergoing training in the hospital, paramedical interns were pressed into service for providing nursing care to patients. Maha: Measles-Rubella vaccination drive to begin on Tue

A six-week Measles-Rubella vaccination drive for children between the ages of nine months and 15 years will begin Tuesday in Maharashtra, state Health Minister Deepak Sawant said. He informed that 3.38 crore children will be covered in the campaign and MR vaccines will be provided free of cost at government hospitals and dispensaries. A 2016 report mentioned that 49,000 children died from measles infection annually in the country, of which 8000-10000 deaths took place in Maharashtra. Over 13.20 crore children have been administered the vaccine so far and 650 of them had reported side-effects, the report said. "The vaccine is safe and children will be kept under observation for an hour after they are administered it. The aim is to eliminate Measles and control Rubella by 2020," Sawant told reporters.
