Former Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena stalwart Manohar Joshi was on Monday shifted out of the ICU of a private hospital, where he was admitted last month after a brain haemorrhage, as his health has stabilised though he remains in semiconscious state, said the medical facility here. Joshi (85), a former Lok Sabha speaker, was admitted to the P D Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai on May 22. "Mr Joshi has been shifted out of the ICU (intensive care unit) and his health is currently stable. Healthcare provider Global Health (Medanta) on Monday said its net profit surged over five fold to Rs 101 crore in the fourth quarter ended on March 31, 2023, aided by increase in bed capacity and higher in-patient footfalls. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 17.5 crore in the January-March quarter of 2021-22 fiscal. Revenue in the reporting quarter rose 37 per cent year-on-year to Rs 732 crore, the company said in a statement. For the financial year ended on March 31, 2023, Medanta posted a net profit of Rs 326 crore as against Rs 196 crore in FY22. Revenue rose to Rs 2,759 crore in the last fiscal as against Rs 2,206 crore in 2021-22 fiscal. Health authorities in Meghalaya have turned to religious leaders to seek their help in spreading awareness on tobacco-related cancer, officials said on Wednesday. Meghalaya records about 8,000 deaths per year due to cancer out of which 70 per cent are tobacco-related cancer cases, they said. The state also has a record 131 cancer cases per 1 lakh population and this is ten times the national average, cancer surgeon at the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences Dr Caleb Harris told PTI. At the institute alone, about 1200 cancer cases are recorded annually and about 750 800 cases are tobacco-related cancer cases, he said adding that esophageal cancer, the most prevalent in the state, is caused by use of tobacco, alcohol and betel nut, and hence is preventable.
