Australian tourist gets lost passport back, thanks Pondy cops

An Australian tourist, who lost his bag containing his passport and e-cards here a couple of days ago, was all praise for the police who recovered the bag and returned it to him today. On July 25, the tourist Jack Lawrence was taking a stroll on the beach road, when he lost his bag, police said. Yesterday, two policemen found the bag lying on the beach road and handed it over to their higher officials. Later, the superintendent of police contacted the tourist and handed over the bag to him. The Australian's joy knew no bounds upon getting his bag and thanked the police personnel. On learning about the incident, Territorial Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, who was formerly an IPS officer, appreciated the policemen for their good work of restoring the bag to its owner.

Foundation laid for int'l cruise terminal at Cochin Port

The foundation stone for the International Cruise Terminal at the Ernakulam Wharf of Cochin Port was laid by Union Tourism Minister Alphons Kannanthanam here today. The function held at Ernakulam Wharf was attended by MPs K V Thomas, Richard Hay, MLAs Hibi Eden, KJ Maxi, Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain and A V Ramana, Chairman, Cochin Port Trust. The new international cruise terminal, having 2,253 square metres area, would be equipped to handle up to 5,000 tourists. Being one of the prime cruise tourism destinations in India, Kochi has been getting around 40 cruise liners every year bringing tens of thousands of high net worth international tourists to Kerala. Cochin Port Trust has been promoting cruise tourism as a social obligation to support the local economy. Manipur hosts 11th pineapple festival

Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla has recently inaugurated the 11th state-level pineapple festival, where sellers and buyers met to promote pineapple as a viable cash crop and help the farmers to attain a sustainable livelihood.Pineapple farming is one of the major sources of income for many farmers. Northern Railway extends 2 trains to Haridwar to clear kanwaria rush

The Northern Railway has decided to extend two trains to Haridwar to clear the extra rush of passengers and for the convenience of kanwarias, according to a statement of the Railways. The Northern Railway (NR) has extended the 74023 Delhi- Shamli DEMU. It will leave Shamli at 11.02 pm on its onward journey to Haridwar, where it will reach at 1.55 am the next day. The arrangement has been made from July 28 to August 9. On its return journey, the 74022 Haridwar-Delhi DEMU will depart from Haridwar at 2.05 am and reach Shamli at 5.30 am. It will proceed on its onward journey to Delhi at 5.40 am. On the extended portion, the train will stop at Thana Bhawan, Rampur Maniharan, Tapari, Roorkee and Jawalapur stations. The NR has also extended the 64557 Delhi-Saharanpur MEMU. It will reach Saharanpur at 9.50 pm and depart on its onward journey to Haridwar at 10.35 pm, where it will arrive at 00.45 am. No feasible site found to relocate Mandovi casinos: Goa CM

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Legislative Assembly today that his government wanted to remove casinos from Mandovi River but had not yet found a feasible site for their relocation. The state has six casinos which are currently anchored on Mandovi River. "The government has decided to remove casinos from River Mandovi but till today no alternate feasible site has been finalised. The matter is under examination," he told the House. In his written reply, Parrikar also said the state was in the process of drafting a policy on casinos. Parrikar, replying to a private member's motion tabled by Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, said that the state would draft rules for a gaming commission by December this year. A gaming commissioner would be appointed after that, he said.

NGT anguished over Ganga's condition, says water unfit to use

The National Green Tribunal today said the water of the Ganga river, between Haridwar and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, was unfit for drinking and bathing, and expressed anguish over the situation. The green panel said that innocent people drank and bathed in the river with reverence, without knowing that it may adversely affect their health. "Innocent persons are drinking and bathing in the Ganga out of reverence and respect. They don't know that it may be dangerous to their health. If cigarette packets can contain a warning saying it is 'injurious to health', why not the people be informed of the adverse effects (of the river water)," the NGT said. The bench, headed by NGT chairperson A K Goel, said "we are of the view that on account of great reverence to great Ganga, innocent persons may drink and bathe without knowing that the water is unfit for consumption. Only good tourists welcome in Goa: Tourism Minister

Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar stated that only "good tourists" who respect the culture of Goa are welcome in the state."We will not allow those who do not respect Goenkarponn (Goaness) and follow our laws," he told ANI.In the wake of the recent restrictions imposed on the consumption of Alcohol in Goa, Ajgaonkar noted that the restriction was due to the activities people indulge in after drinking."Alcohol is not a problem, but the activities they indulge in after consuming it are problematic. We only want good tourists," he added.Last week, Ajgaonkar welcomed Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's announcement to impose fines on tourists for litter and drinking in public.Parrikar had announced that from August 15 onwards, those who drink alcohol in public would be fined Rs 2,500.The Chief Minister also warned that littering the state with beer bottles would attract a steeper fine.

The Railway Board has instructed its zones to convert overaged coaches into rail-themed restaurants to generate revenue and provide employment. "Rail museums/heritage parks that witness substantial footfall, has potential to supplement its revenue as well generate additional employment by opening rail coach restaurants. For this purpose, railways may suitably convert, refurbish one or two overage coaches into rail theme-based restaurant for catering to museum visitors and general public," Subrata Nath, executive director (heritage), has said to the railway zones in a letter dated July 21.
