A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly duping a Japanese tourist of Rs 9,000 at Connaught Place here, on the pretext of facilitating tours to Jaipur and Agra, the police said today. The Japanese tourist was recently roaming in Connaught Place, where some touts interacted and misguided him. They duped the tourist of Rs 9,000 on the pretext of the tours, DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said. On the complaint of the tourist, a case under Delhi Prevention of Touting and Malpractices Against Tourists Act, 2010, was registered at BK Road police station. During investigation, accused Sujal Raheja was arrested, he said. A team of special staff has been formed to check the activities of touts in Connaught Place. The team keeps close watch on tourist hotspots including Connaught Place and Scindia House areas frequented by the tourists.
The National Rail Museum has decided to keep its doors open till 9 PM from next month in a bid to increase footfalls at the country's premier custodian of railway heritage, senior officials of the museum said today. The move is in line with the views of Tourism Minister K J Alphons, who has been advocating that places of tourist interest should remain open post evening. "We are still working out the details. We have to give the tourists who visit at night a different package than what we give to the day tourists. We are working that out. But the museum will be open from 6 PM to 9 PM," said Amit Saurastri, Director, National Rail Museum (NRM). Currently, the museum is open throughout the year except on Mondays. The timings for visiting the museum currently are 10 AM to 5 PM. The new timings of 10 AM to 5 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM will come into effect from May 1. An Indian teenaged girl will tomorrow leave for the Mt Everest's base camp as part of her endeavor to become the youngest Indian woman to scale the world's highest peak. Almost 60 per cent of restaurants in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru are located on high-street markets due to limited supply of quality space in malls and scope for organic expansion, according to a survey by property consultant CBRE. Nearly 82 per cent of the restaurants in these three cities are domestic standalone outlet/chains, while the rest 18 per cent restaurants being of international origin. "Indian cuisine still dominates the country's taste palette with a 24 per cent share, followed by multi-cuisine with a 22 per cent share," CBRE survey found out. These are the main findings of CBRE India's survey conducted among more than 1,200 restaurants in key locations of Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore. The survey was conducted to get a better insight into the operation dynamics of these food and beverage (F&B) operators. More than 1.90 lakh tourists from Pakistan and around 35.50 lakh tourists from Bangladesh visited India in 2016 and 2017, the government informed Parliament today. Minister of State for Tourism K J Alphons told the Rajya Sabha that while foreign tourist arrivals in India during 2016 was 8.80 million, in 2017 the number stood at 10.18 million. In 2016, the number of tourists from Bangladesh was 13,804,409 while those from Pakistan was 1,04,720. In 2017, the number of tourists from Bangladesh was 21,70,406 and those from Pakistan was 89,692, he said.
The share of India's foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) globally during 2016-2017 was 0.71 per cent, while its share of international tourist arrivals, which includes arrival of foreign tourists and that of non resident nationals, was 1.18 per cent, the government informed Parliament today. A 17th-century Japanese lord produced wine and opium for medical purposes 200 years earlier than thought, a study of ancient documents has found. It was believed that large-scale Japanese wine brewing began in the 1870's. However, researchers found that the wine produced by Tadatoshi Hosokawa, a 17th century lord of Kyusyu, Japan, in the Kokura Region began more than 200 years earlier in 1627. The researchers also showed that Lord Hosokawa ordered his liegeman, Taroemon Ueda, to make wine from wild grapes and send it to Edo, the former name of Japan's capital city Tokyo. A detailed study by the researchers from Kumamoto University in Japan shows that wine was only produced from 1627 to 1630, and that Lord Hosokawa ordered the wine be sent to Edo for each of those four years.
