Gatimaan Express to go till Jhansi from April 1

In order to facilitate tourists, the Gatimaan Express, which plies between the Nizamuddin and the Agra Cantt railway stations, will now go up to Jhansi from April 1, a North Central Railway official said today. "While it would be an added advantage for international and domestic tourists, it would boost the economic viability of the train," Divisional Commercial Manager (Agra) and PRO Sanchit Tyagi said. He said the move came following demands from tourists for extension of the train's route up to Jhansi. The run of the Gatimaan was extended up to Gwalior on Feb 19, 2018, he said, adding that the train would run at 160 kmph between Nizamuddin and Agra Cantt and at 130 kmph between Agra Cantt and Jhansi. Tygai said the run up to Gwalior would be successful and financially viable, and would commence from April 1. 98 illegal occupants in commercial tower of Le Meridien: Govt

At least 98 individuals or companies have illegally occupied the commercial tower of Delhi's Le Meridien hotel, the lease of which was cancelled by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) last year, Parliament was informed today. "The commercial tower of the Hotel Le Meridien block is illegally occupied by 98 companies /individuals as the hotelier either sold certain portions of the public property in gross violation of law or sublet rooms or floors of the hotel in violation of terms and conditions of erstwhile license," Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. NDMC had cancelled the license deed of CJ International Hotels Limited in March last year due to the non-payment of outstanding dues of Rs 518.80 crores. The civic body had also initiated eviction and recovery proceedings, but the hotel group challenged the cancellation of license in court. Australian paraplegic 'humbled' by Everest base camp trek

A wheelchair-bound Australian who reached Everest base camp under his own power today said he was "humbled" to be the first paraplegic to make the gruelling journey mostly unaided. Scott Doolan, 28, took ten days to reach the foot of the world's highest peak. He suffered a stress fracture while navigating the rocky terrain and extreme altitude -- in his wheelchair where possible, on his hands and occasionally being carried. Doolan reached the camp, 5,364 metres above sea level, on Sunday, taking barely longer than many able-bodied trekkers. "I was struggling to breathe at that time because I was walking on my hands but I just remember looking up and seeing a crowd of about 20 people. Once I actually got there they all start cheering and that was pretty damn humbling," Doolan said of the moment he reached base camp. TSAF mountaineers are set for Mount Everest Expedition

Swarnalata Dalai and Poonam Rana and senior instructor Sandeep Toliya will be leaving tomorrow for Kathmandu to participate in the Tata Steel Mount Everest Expedition. Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) today announced the commencement of the Expedition where the three mountaineers -- trained and mentored by Bachendri Pal -- are taking part. They will start the trek from Jiri, which is along the route taken by Bachendri Pal during her Mount Everest Expedition in 1984. This will further help the climbers to build on their mental and physical fitness. Paintings by Chinese artists on Indian themes opens in Shanghai

A special exhibition of 100 paintings on Indian themes like images of the banks of the river Ganges, Taj Mahal and Red Fort drawn by leading Chinese artists after their tour of India has been opened for public in Shanghai. The paintings on Indian themes drawn by leading Chinese artists from Shanghai Artists Union were put on display at the Xuhui Art Gallery on March 24. The exhibit features nearly 100 paintings drawn by a group of leading artists who visited India earlier. The painters included Zhang Weiren from Chinese Artists Association, M Luo Weimin, famous painter, Wu Gang, Associate Professor and He Wei, Associate Professor at Tongji University from the Eastern China Region. They visited India in March 2017 at the invitation of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and interacted with leading Indian artists at workshops held in New Delhi, Varanasi, Jaipur and Agra. Govt keen to promote int'l tourism to Mathura, says UP minister

In a bid to generate local employment opportunities in and around Mathura, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to exploit the rich cultural heritage of Brijbhumi to promote tourism here among international tourists. Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister Tassaduq Mufti today said the Hari Parbat fort in Srinagar should be preserved and promoted as the centre of attraction of the state's summer capital. Tourism project to conserve Kozhikode biodiversity

A tourism project to conserve the mangroves, biodiversity, local resources and traditional jobs in Kozhikode district was launched here today. State Minister for Tourism andCo-operation Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the 'Jalaayanam tourism project'at the Kambilipparambu Mambuzha Farm Tourism Centre. Speaking on the occasion, he said five packages would be offered under the project. They are: 'Know Kadalundi', a full-day package, offering country boat rides, taking tourists closer to the mangrove forests, the traditional lake and marine resources. 'Feel Mohabbath with Mambuzha' offers tourists a day-long visit to centres where mats, earthen pots, brass iron box are manufactured.
