The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 200 Indian star tortoises from a hotel room in Kolkata and arrested two persons in connection with the case. According to a statement issued by the DRI, the accused had planned to smuggle the tortoises to Bangkok. Acting on an information that the tortoises were kept in a room of a hotel on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road in Kolkata, officers of the DRI mounted a surveillance on the hotel during the night of March 22, the statement said. Even as the DRI sleuths kept vigil, a person came to the hotel carrying a backpack and a suitcase and entered the room already occupied by another persons. "DRI officers then entered the room and found the tortoises kept in two bags. A total of 214 Indian star tortoises were found," it said. These tortoises are rare and endangered species and are often poached from the wild and sold internationally to be kept as pets and also as ingredients of Chinese medicine.

The Delhi government today announced that the construction of the elevated road over Barapullah Nallah (PhaseII) is likely to be completed by March end. In the Budget presented today in the Delhi Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the move would decongest the ring road, besides reducing travel time by 15 to 20 minutes. He said that a Rs 5,145 crore has been allocated for public transport, including road infrastructure in 2018-19. Construction of the elevated road of Barapullah PhaseIII from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar will be completed by December 2018 at a cost of Rs 1,260 crore, the move would reduce travel time to 10 to 12 minutes from the existing 30 minutes. The Railways will restore the heritage value of the century-old Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), widely known as toy train, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani has said. He said new coaches would be added to the toy train which climbs 2,000 metres from the plains of New Jalpaiguri and air-conditioned coaches would also be introduced. "This is an important line for us. It is a world heritage site. We know its importance. It is familiar to tourists around the world," Lohani told reporters here yesterday.
