Over 200 star tortoises seized from smugglers in Kolkata, 2 held
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 200 Indian star tortoises from a hotel room in Kolkata and arrested two persons in connection with the case. According to a statement issued by the DRI, the accused had planned to smuggle the tortoises to Bangkok. Acting on an information that the tortoises were kept in a room of a hotel on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road in Kolkata, officers of the DRI mounted a surveillance on the hotel during the night of March 22, the statement said. Even as the DRI sleuths kept vigil, a person came to the hotel carrying a backpack and a suitcase and entered the room already occupied by another persons. "DRI officers then entered the room and found the tortoises kept in two bags. A total of 214 Indian star tortoises were found," it said. These tortoises are rare and endangered species and are often poached from the wild and sold internationally to be kept as pets and also as ingredients of Chinese medicine.
IYD: Govt to take foreign Yoga professionals to Kerala
The AYUSH ministry will organise a tour of Yoga professionals from abroad to Kerala, known as "Yoga's birth place", as part of various programmes in the run up to the International Day of Yoga (IDY). Yoga Ambassadors Tour, the 10-day educational tour of Kerala is being organised with the support of the Kerala Tourism and the Association of Tourism Trade Organisations, India (ATTOI). "Applications have been invited from established and practising yoga professionals from around the world to have a first-hand experience of Kerala, the southern state of India, the country proud to be known as the birth place of Yoga," a senior AYUSH Ministry official said. The tour will culminate on June 21, which is the International Day of Yoga, and the delegates would also get a chance to participate in a mass yoga drill to mark IDY 2018. Maharashtra govt starts coal mine tours in Yavatmal
To create awareness about the coal mining operations, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), in association with Western Coalfields, has introduced mine tourism at Wani in Yavatmal district. This is the third such tourism site opened for the public in Maharashtra after the ones at Saoner and Gondegaon. "Mine tourism is a niche segment and we are expanding it further by introducing new mine tourism site at Wani in Yavatmal to attract a large number of tourists from across the globe," Maharashtra tourism minister Madan Yerawar said in a release issued here. Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin on Friday termed the inauguration of the direct flight service between New Delhi and Tel Aviv as a historic moment.He further said the initiative would be very beneficial from the tourism perspective."It is truly a historic moment in the relations of India and Israel. We will see many more Indian tourists coming to Israel now," Levin said.As a measure to boost the ties between India-Israel, Air India on Thursday inaugurated its direct flight service between the two capital cities.Air India Chairman Pradeep Singh Kharola and the Director of Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) Hassan Madah began this new chapter by cutting a cake at the inauguration ceremony.This is also the first flight that will fly over Saudi Arabia covering a shorter route that will save three hours, to complete the journey in mere seven hours.It may be noted that Israel's national carrier, El Al, already operates direct flights between Tel Aviv and Mumbai.
Elevated road over Barapullah Nallah to be completed by March end
The Delhi government today announced that the construction of the elevated road over Barapullah Nallah (PhaseII) is likely to be completed by March end. In the Budget presented today in the Delhi Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the move would decongest the ring road, besides reducing travel time by 15 to 20 minutes. He said that a Rs 5,145 crore has been allocated for public transport, including road infrastructure in 2018-19. Construction of the elevated road of Barapullah PhaseIII from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar will be completed by December 2018 at a cost of Rs 1,260 crore, the move would reduce travel time to 10 to 12 minutes from the existing 30 minutes. Other constructions set to begin in 2018-19 include the Kalindi Bypass road, an elevated road from Signature Bridge to Kalindi Kunj Bypass and an elevated road over Najafgarh Drain from Kakrola More to Wazirabad. The Railways will restore the heritage value of the century-old Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), widely known as toy train, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani has said. He said new coaches would be added to the toy train which climbs 2,000 metres from the plains of New Jalpaiguri and air-conditioned coaches would also be introduced. "This is an important line for us. It is a world heritage site. We know its importance. It is familiar to tourists around the world," Lohani told reporters here yesterday. About the damage caused to Sonada and Gayabari stations during the Gorkhaland agitation last year, the railway board chairman said that he will inspect it.
