Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari today stressed the need to improve waterways in the country to cut down the cost of logistics, which, he said, will boost the economy and tourism sector. The guidelines of the Ministry of Tourism for approval/classification/re-classification of operational hotels stipulate that hotels of 1, 2, 3 and 4 star categories availing subsidy/tax benefits/other benefits from the Central/State Government would be subject to a lock-in period of 8 years so that these hotels continue to serve as budget category hotels.

The Gujarat government has spent over Rs 62 crore in the last two years on organising various festivals which attracted over 4,900 foreign tourists, the Legislative Assembly was told today. During Question Hour, Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar sought details of the expenditure incurred by the government in organising various festivals in 2016 and 2017. He also sought to know the number of foreign tourists having visited these festivals, such as the Kite Festival, Beach Festival and Rann Utsav among others. In a written reply, Tourism Minister Ganpat Vasava stated that his department had spent Rs 62.09 crore on organising such events. While the the total expenditure stood at Rs 21.14 crore in 2016, it almost doubled in 2017 when the total cost shot up to Rs 40.94 crore, Vasava said in the reply. The image of Goa seems to be changing to a 'monsoon destination', from being a popular summer hot-spot till now for vacationers. This is so because there has been a 60 per cent rise in the number of visitors to the coastal state during the rainy season last year, a Goa tourism official said. Till sometime back, the state, known for its scenic beaches, used to receive foreign tourists mostly in the summer months while the monsoon time was traditionally a lean period. However, as by data released by the state tourism department last week, there was a 60 per cent rise in the number of tourists during the last year's monsoon season - between June and September. This is a phenomenal rise as compared to 22 per cent growth in the number of visitors in the same period in 2016, state tourism director Menino D'Souza said.
