China to use AI to stop 'uncivilised visitors' from entering public parks

China is planning to introduce artificial intelligence systems in parks in Beijing to ban "uncivilised visitors" from entering the public areas in the city. The Beijing park management authorities are mulling to have a list of unruly visitors identified through artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology. The list will allow the authorities to curb bad tourist behaviour during events such as the three-day holidays around Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as the Qingming Festival. On the second day of the three-day holidays around Tomb Sweeping Day, which ended on Sunday, parks in Beijing witnessed an upsurge in visitors, which led to uncivilised tourist behaviour, officials at the Beijing Municipal Administration Centre of Parks told the Beijing Youth Daily. The centre is considering establishing a "blacklist" to restrict loutish travellers - for example, those who destroy cultural relics and refuse to stop - from entering the park, the report said. The report said that some

In February, Ajgaonkar, while talking to industry stakeholders, said there was a drop in tourist arrivals in the state, though he did not mention any statistics. As per the tourism department's figures of last year, Goa annually attracts around six million tourists, including domestic and foreign travellers. "There has been around 40 per cent drop in foreign tourists in Goa, which is tremendous," claimed Savio Messiah, president of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, an apex body of tour operators in the state. He said while there were no specific proper figures available about domestic tourists, "there was definitely a drop in occupancy in hotels in

'Road nahin, vote nahin': Tired of govt apathy, HP village calls for boycott

Four months ago, when Kaushalya Devi needed a surgery on her leg, the 83-year-old had to be carried on a cot to the motorable road outside the village and then transferred to an ambulance. For over five-six decades, the residents of the Lahru Tika village in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district have been using the 200-metre-long stretch, about three feet wide, of an adjoining village to reach the motorable road. The footpath is too narrow for four-wheelers -- and sometimes it takes toll. Kaushalya Devi is doing well now after the surgery, but Subedar Bishamber Dass (retd) was not so fortunate The 300-odd residents of Lahru Tika have been pressing their demand of a proper road for over two decades now, but in vain, Kaushalya's nephew Vipin Kumar claimed. Banners calling for boycott of the parliamentary elections have ...

Tourist numbers double at North Korea marathon

Twice as many foreigners as last year gathered in Pyongyang Sunday for the city's annual marathon, tour firms said, as reduced tensions see visitor numbers rise in isolated North Korea. The event -- part of the celebrations for the anniversary of founder Kim Il Sung's birth in 1912 -- is the highlight of the North's tourism calendar and offers the chance to run or jog through the streets of the tightly-controlled city. Around 950 Westerners entered the event, according to market leader Koryo Tours, compared to some 450 last year when numbers slumped. That brought participation almost back to the levels of 2017, before tensions soared as the North carried out a series of missile launches and leader Kim Jong Un traded threats and personal insults with US President Donald Trump. The same year, Washington also banned its citizens from visiting the North following the death of Otto Warmbier, a US student jailed for trying to steal a propaganda poster who died in a mysterious coma days ...
