Polish woman tweets child's letter to PM, seeks return to Goa

A Polish woman has tweeted a letter written by her 11-year-old daughter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking help to return to Goa. Alicja Wanatko and her daughter of Marta Kotlarska were staying in Goa, where the latter attended school, before they were sent back to their country due to non-renewal of visa. On March 24 this year, Alicja's mother, on her return to India from Sri Lanka, was turned away from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru when she went to renew her Indian visa. Marta had to wait in Thailand before she could return to India to pick up her daughter from Goa and leave the country. Both are right now in Combodia. Man kills himself by jumping on burning pyre at crematorium

A 34-year-old man ended his life by jumping onto a burning pyre at a crematorium here, police said Sunday. Mahesh Kotangde jumped onto the pyre of a dead man who had been cremated at Jaitala crematorium Saturday evening, police said. Kotangde lived near the crematorium, said inspector R S Kshirsagar of MIDC police station. The dead man's relatives and friends had left when Kotangde jumped into the fire, but some children who were playing nearby saw him and raised alarm, the officer said. The reason for Kotangde's extreme step was yet to be ascertained. But probe revealed that he was suffering from a mental ailment for the last three years and was also a heavy drinker, Kshirsagar said.

Temperature above 40 degree Celsius in 10 places in Odisha

Heat wave condition remained unabated in Odisha with the temperature soaring above 40 degree Celsius in at least 10 places in the state on Sunday. Titlagarh in western Odisha turned out to be the hottest place in the state recording 43.8 degree Celsius, the Meteorological Centre here said. Closely following Titlagarh was Bhawanipatna and Bolangir where the mercury touched 43 degree Celsius, it said. The temperature stood at 42.9 degree Celsius in Sambalpur, while it was 42.4 degree in both Talcher and Malkangiri, 42.1 degree in Hirakud, 41.1 degree in Angul, 41 degree in Sonepur and 40.4 degree in Jharsuguda. The state capital of Bhubaneswar recorded 36 degree Celsius coupled with a high relative humidity of 98 per cent, while in neighbouring Cuttack the maximum temperature was 35.6 degree Celsius.
