Shatrughan seeks national mourning for Karunanidhi

BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha today expressed grief over death of DMK president M Karunanidhi and urged the Centre to announce a national mourning for him. Sinha said Karunanidhi was "most loved, admired and respected leader and a real role model for everybody." The 94-year-old leader died at Chennai after prolonged illness today. "His passing away is an heart-breaking news for all of us," the BJP MP from Patna Sahib told PTI over phone. It would be apt to describe him as the "last mughul" of Indian politics, Sinha, who served as Union minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee ministry, said. "Its true that the show must go on but the show will not be the same without Karunanidhi," the actor-politician said.

4 undertrials escape from juvenile home

Four undertrials fled from a juvenile home at Ram Colony, Camp, around 5 kilometers from here, after breaking the toilet grill, police said today. Police said that last night after taking their dinner the inmates went to the toilet where they broke the grill and fled. SSP J Elanchezhian said a case was registered at Sadar police station in this connection. Police is searching for the escaped inmates, the SSP said. All police stations in Punjab and adjoining states were informed and asked to locate the juveniles, the SSP said.

Telangana CM condoles Karuna's demise

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today condoled the death of DMK president M Karunanidhi, saying the demise of the veteran leader is a great loss to the country's politics. Karunanidhi, who died today aged 94, was among a few leaders who made commmon people politically aware, a release from the Chief Minister's Office quoted him as saying. Rao expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members. He would attend the funeral of Karunanidhi, the release said.

Spain heatwave death toll rises to nine

Spain's death toll from a particularly virulent heatwave rose to nine in just one week, authorities said today, as the country suffers sky-high temperatures. A 66-year-old man who died on Thursday in the southwestern region of Extremadura near Portugal was found to have died of heat stroke, a spokesman for the regional health department told AFP. A 75-year-old woman who died two days later also succumbed to heat stroke, he added. This brings to nine the number of people to have died as a direct consequence of the heatwave. A 40-year-old German man who was on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage also died from heat stroke in Extremadura, as did an 81-year-old man. Parts of the region registered temperatures of up to 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) at the weekend. Over in the northeast in Catalonia, three homeless men have died. Two other men -- a road worker in his 40s and a 78-year-old pensioner tending to his vegetable garden -- also passed away from heatstroke last week.

Internet comedian Shiggy, the man responsible for the viral 'In My Feelings' challenge, said that he does not support the idea of people jumping out of their moving cars to perform the challenge.TMZ quoted Shiggy as saying that Drake fans have been putting their lives at risk by dancing in the middle of traffic. He kick-started the challenge after he posted the very first #InMyFeeling video where he was seen grooving to the song by Drake. The video, however, did not involve a moving car. The challenge only went uphill from there, becoming a viral sensation.Shiggy clarified that performing outside a moving car was not his idea. Hry to honour CWG medal winners on Independence Day

Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anil Vij today said the medal winners of Commonwealth Games and other sports events would be honoured at district-level Independence Day functions on August 15. He said that there would be no better occasion than the Independence Day to honour these sports persons and directions have been issued to make all necessary arrangements. Vij said that jobs would be provided to about 300 sportspersons under the sports quota. Over 100 take ill after eating at community feast in C'garh

Over 100 people fell ill after reportedly eating food at a feast organised following a funeral in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district, police said today. The incident happened yesterday in Gadhumariya village in the district, located around 250 kilometres from the state capital Raipur. "Villagers complained of uneasiness and several vomited after consuming food at a community feast held yesterday afternoon after a funeral," Raigarh Additional Superintendent of Police Harish Rathore said. He said that 87 people, including 25 women and children. were rushed to the district hospital while 15 others were taken to hospitals in the vicinity. "Forty people are still undergoing treatment at the district hospital. They are out of danger. Investigations are underway to find out the cause of the incident," Rathore said. In a similar incident on July 28 in the state's Rajnandgaon district, a woman had died and 149 others fell ill after partaking a community feast.

Award tenders for laying pipeline to supply treated sewage water: NGT

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to award tenders for laying a pipeline to supply treated sewage water for gardening in a south Delhi colony. A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore and expert member Satyawan Singh Garbyal directed the DDA and the SDMC to complete the exercise by November 15, and warned that in case of default, a cost of Rs 10,000 each would be imposed on them. "Further, they are directed to continue the supply of water by temporary arrangements till November 15, 2018. DDA and MCD Delhi shall submit a report on completion of the work on November 16, 2018," the bench said. The order came after the tribunal was informed that tenders for pipes have been floated and once they are finalised, the pipes will be laid down on a stretch of approximately 6 km, after which regular supply of treated water will be made available to the parks.
