Gautam Gambhir among 5 sportsperson received Padma Award

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, and four other sports personalities received Padma Awards from President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday for their awe-inspiring contribution to the sports world. Gambhir was conferred with Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, along with footballer Sunil Chhetri, archer Bombayla Devi Laishram and Prashanti Singh, noted basketball player.The third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, was given to Bachendri Pal, first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest.The investiture ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. JNU organises award ceremony in honour of freedom fighters of Northeast

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Friday organised an award ceremony in honour of freedom fighters of northeast and five students were felicitated, the varsity said. The NAMASTE Governor Acharya Award 2018 was organised by Special Centre for the Study of North East India, JNU. "University education must be towards the service of society and the nation," said Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya, who was present at the event. "Five awards will be given every year in honour of freedom fighters of the states of Northeast India in rotation," said Prof Bhagat Oinam, chairperson of the centre. The competition for the awards was based on the research works being carried out by students of the JNU on various issues and problems of the region. Seema Mehta bags 'Nari Shakti Puraskar' award

Renowned Kathak dancer Seema Mehta has been conferred the 'Nari Shakti Puraskar' award for her contribution towards women empowerment over the last 15 years. She received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi as part of the Women's Day celebrations, a press release said. Mehta, who began her journey in Kathak set up her dance school in Mumbai in 2010. She is also the Director of 'Chhandam Nritya Bharati' in Mumbai and was actively involved in promotion of Kathak dance form. "I am extremely humbled and honoured to have received the Nari Shakti Puraskar award. I would like to dedicate it to my mother - a woman who stood by me through thick and thin. Queen 'deeply saddened' by New Zealand mosque attacks

Queen Elizabeth II, New Zealand's head of state, said she was "deeply saddened" by the attacks on two mosques on Friday which left 49 people dead. "I have been deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch... At this tragic time, my thoughts and prayers are with all New Zealanders," she said in a message. "Prince Philip and I send our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives," she said, paying tribute to emergency workers and volunteers providing support to the injured. Queen Elizabeth, 92, the world's oldest and longest-serving living monarch, is queen of 15 other realms besides Britain, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. She last visited New Zealand in 2002 as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

NZ mosque gunman was Australian right-wing 'terrorist': Australia PM

The gunman who killed numerous worshippers in a New Zealand mosque on Friday was a right-wing "terrorist" with Australian citizenship, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. "We stand here and condemn, absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist," Morrison told a press conference. He confirmed media reports that the gunman who mowed down worshippers in the main mosque in the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch was an Australian-born citizen.
