Former fast bowler RP Singh on Friday backed Suryakumar Yadav to be India's option at No 4 during the ICC World Cup in the possible absence of Shreyas Iyer, and said the Mumbaikar should be given ample game-time ahead of the big event. Not having a strong batter at the No 4 slot was one of India's failings in the 2019 World Cup, and four years down the line the team could be troubled by the very same issue as Shreyas has been recuperating from an injury. But Suryakumar, so far, has not been able to replicate his T20I prowess in ODI cricket, and he has gone without a fifty in the last 16 matches. However, RP Singh said ruling out the option of Suryakumar would be naive. Suryakumar Yadav is a good option for No 4, along with Shreyas (Iyer), provided he is fit. But if you are looking at him even as a backup option, it is important to give him game-time and he is certainly a good pick," said RP Singh during an interaction organised by Jio Cinema. Suryakumar is yet to make his mark in
Suryakumar Yadav was sported in a jersey which had Sanju Samson's name printed on the back. But why did that happen?
India captain Rohit Sharma didn't expect the Kensington Oval track to deteriorate so much but defended his decision to promote ODI specialists ahead of him and Virat Kohli in the first match here on Thursday. India beat West Indies by five wickets in a game where spinners from either side picked up 10 out of the 15 wickets that fell on a rank turner with a lot of bounce and carry. "I never thought the pitch would play like that, it was the team's need to bowl first. The pitch had everything for seamers and spinners, our guys did well to restrict them to that score," Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony. The skipper himself came into bat at No. 7 and said that it made him take a trip down memory lane when he used to come in at that number as a rookie. "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days," Rohit said. On a serious note, it was a move to give game time to white ball specialists like Suryakumar Yadav. "We wanted to give game
Skipper Rohit Sharma and senior pro Virat Kohli, who have 76 international hundreds between them, decided to give game time to middle-order batters as India beat West Indies by five wickets in the opening ODI, riding on exploits from spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. After Jadeja (3/37 in 6 overs) and Kuldeep (4/6 in 4 overs) set it up beautifully, shooting out the Windies for 114 in 23 overs, Ishan Kishan helped himself to a half-century (52 off 46 balls) in India's successful chase in just 22.5 overs. With 12 ODI matches in hand to find the perfect combination and some pieces of the puzzle still to be fixed before the World Cup, Rahul Dravid and Rohit's decision to give game time to middle-order batters was a welcome move. While it didn't exactly go as per plan for Suryakumar Yadav (19), who played a non-existent sweep shot, and Hardik Pandya (5), freakishly run-out at the non-striker's end, Kishan did his cause no harm with his fourth half-century. The chase was never
India will be sending a second string squad for the T20I series in Ireland but a fit-again pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be tested during the three matches in Malahide, BCCI serretary Jay Shah said on Thursday. Bumrah is currently doing his extensive rehabilitation at the NCA post surgery to cure his lower back stress fracture and is expected to play a couple of warm-up games before a final call is taken. "Bumrah is totally fit and he may go to Ireland," Shah told reporters here during a media conference. He also said that with 12 ODIs left before the World Cup, the endeavour will be to have a consistency in selection. "There will be consistency in selections apart from Ireland tour," Shah added, making it clear that save Bumrah, who will be making a comeback, none of the World Cup bound senior players, including T20 captain Hardik Pandya will be selected for the three-match series which starts within six days of completion of the five T20Is against West Indies in th
Three full board members have written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a change in schedule of their matches in the ODI World Cup in India, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Thursday. The World Cup starts on October 5. Speaking after a meeting with the associations hosting World Cup games, Shah said the issue of scheduling will be sorted in the next three-four days. "Three members have written to the ICC for a schedule change. Only the date and timings will be changed, venues will not be changed. If there is a six day gap between games, we are trying to reduce it to 4-5 days. Picture will be clear in three-four days. Changes will happen in consultation with the ICC," Shah said. It was reported earlier that the much awaited India versus Pakistan schedule could be rescheduled as October 15 happens to be the opening day of Navratri celebrations in the city and security officials will be already working overtime. A change in schedule of one game is likely to have a domino
In the first ODI of the three-match series, India captain Rohit Sharma on Thursday won the toss and opted to bowl first at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados
An Indian team in transition will feel robbed of an opportunity as torrential rain came in its way of potentially winning the second Test against West Indies and completing a 2-0 series whitewash here on Monday. Eyeing a clean sweep after their victory inside three days in Dominica, India called the shots here too and set the hosts an imposing target of 365. But the match ended in a draw after the fifth and final day's play was washed out. Having taken two wickets to leave the beleaguered West Indies trailing by 289 runs by the end of the fourth day's play, the Indians would have certainly fancied their chances of emerging victorious and grabbing a full 24 points in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. But that was not to be, thanks to the heavy downpour as India concluded their Test campaign with no further gains. The main cover was taken off after losing nearly two and half hours of play, as dark clouds gave way to clear blue skies. The game was first supposed to st
After the day's play, Kishan revealed that he had a chat with Pant at National Cricket Academy (NCA), which helped him with his bat position
India gave themselves the best chance to win the second Test against the West Indies with an ultra-aggressive batting approach after lead pacer Mohammed Siraj produced career-best figures on another rain-hit day here. Siraj's five-wicket haul in the morning session allowed India to bowl out the West Indies for 255 in their first innings after the hosts started day four at 229 for five. Having gained a massive 183-run first innings lead, India went for an all-out attack in the second innings to smash 181 for two in 24 overs before declaring 35 minutes after the tea break to set the home team a 365-run target. India raced to 100 runs in 12.2 overs, the fastest team hundred in Test cricket history. At stumps on day four, West Indies were 76 for 2 in 32 overs with R Ashwin removing Kraigg Brathwaite (28) and Kirk McKenzie (0). The hosts need another 289 runs on the final day for an improbable win. Tagnarine Chanderpaul and Jermaine Blackwood were batting on 24 and 20 respectively at c
Unperturbed by the absence of a head coach for over six months, Indian women's team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana preferred to look at the silver lining, saying tips shared by a different set of coaching staff will be advantageous. Since the sacking of Ramesh Powar in December last year, the women's cricket team has been without a head coach. The side was even forced to play the T20 World Cup in February without the head of the coaching staff. "The BCCI has been hunting for a long-term coach and we will have one soon," Mandhana said at the pre-match press conference ahead of India's third ODI against Bangladesh. "It's not a very big thing in terms of players. We want to play the best brand of cricket we can. All the coaching staff that has come in has been really helpful. "Sometimes it's an advantage, new coaching staff comes with new tips and new positives. If I take it very positively then its a good thing," the opener added. In April, the BCCI decided to do away with the practic
Walsh also talked about different cricketing batting legends he played with and put Kohli just behind Sachin Tendulkar among Indian greats.
Yashasvi Jaiswal excelling at the top of the batting order with Rohit Sharma in his debut Test series in the Caribbean has been a revelation and the youngster credits it to the continuous interaction with the India skipper when they are at the crease together. Jaiswal had shared a 229-run opening-wicket stand with Rohit in the first Test at Dominica, while in the ongoing second Test here, the two again gave India a strong start with a 139-run partnership. The century stand between the two saw India finish day one of the second Test at 288 for four, and looking good for a big score. "Of course, it's really nice to bat with Rohit bhaiya. We are always taking about the situation and how we can go forward, and, of course, we had our plans... what we can do, and it was really amazing to bat with him," said the opener who scored a 74-ball 57 to add to his 171 in the first Test at Dominica, which India won by an innings and 141 runs. Jaiswal also said the secret to his success is that he
Virat Kohli reached close to a memorable hundred in his 500th International game after the West Indies put up a much needed fight to limit India to 288 for four at stumps on day one of the second Test here on Thursday. The opening duo of Rohit Sharma (80 off 143) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (57 off 74) shared a brisk 139-run stand to provide another perfect launch pad before the West Indies struck four times in the afternoon session to put brakes on India's scoring rate. Kohli (87 batting off 161) and Ravindra Jadeja (36 batting off 84) played some exquisite strokes in the final session and ensured India collected 106 runs in 33.2 overs without losing a wicket. Overall, 84 overs were bowled on the opening day. Kohli, who got off the mark with a straight drive after consuming 20 dot balls, will go into day two just 14 runs shy of his first hundred in an overseas Test since December 2018. Majority of his six boundaries came on the off side including a picture perfect cover drive off a Kemar

Dhawan is one of the most successful Indian batters in the fifty-over ICC events, with 1238 runs in 20 games across two ODI World Cups (2015 and 2019) and two Champions Trophies (2013 and 2017)
After a dominant show in the league phase, India A will be favourites to seal a spot in the final of the Emerging Asia Cup when they face Bangladesh A in the semifinal here on Friday. The most refreshing aspect about India's undefeated run so far in the tournament is that they have found multiple heroes in times of need. India will be hoping for an encore of that all-round show against a tricky and competitive opponent in Bangladesh. Pacer Harshit Rana (4/41) and captain Yash Dhull (108) were India's star performers against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their tournament opener that they won by eight wickets. However, that role was taken over by left-arm spinner Nishant Sindhu (4/14) and openers B Sai Sudarshan (58) and Abhishek Sharma (87) against Nepal. India crushed Nepal by nine wickets. All-rounder Rajvardhan Hangarkekar, who is the top wicket-taker in the tournament with eight wickets, too had chipped in with three wickets in that match. In a keenly anticipated match, In
Virat Kohli will be the fifth Indian and 10th cricketer in the entire world to represent their country in 500 international matches
The seamless transition of Indian cricket is a tribute to the robust domestic sytem and the team environment, Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has said. Dravid is now overseeing the transition phase as a head coach, sometthing he was part of when he along with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly passed the baton to MS Dhoni. Shubman Gill has taken the No 3 role occupied by Cheteshwar Pujara after the departure of Dravid, while 20-year-old lefthander Yashasvi Jaiswal made the opening slot his own with a mature 171 on debut, in the first Test against the West Indies. Their innings and 141 run win also marked two time runners-up India's start to the fresh World Test Championship cycle of 2023-27. "It's a tribute to the domestic system," Dravid said in the media interaction on the eve of the second and final Test of the series here. "It's a tribute to the environment around the team that a lot of young players are able to come in and perform straightaway. "A lot of credit
