Former Jaguars manager who stole $22 mn from team gets 78 months in prison

A former Jacksonville Jaguars financial manager who pled guilty to stealing more than $22 million from the NFL franchise through its virtual credit card programme was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison Tuesday. Judge Henry Lee Adams Jr sentenced Amit Patel, 31, in US District Court in Jacksonville. Patel, wearing a charcoal suit and a burgundy tie, showed no emotion inside the packed courthouse as the punishment was handed down. Prosecutors said Patel has returned $1.89 million, leaving his restitution tab at $21,132,454.40 -- a figure the judge acknowledged he will never be able to pay back following a felony conviction. Patel pled guilty in December to one count of wire fraud and one count of making an illegal monetary transaction. The judge sentenced Patel to 78 months on each count, to run concurrently. It was the lowest number under sentencing guidelines. He also got three years of supervised release. Patel's lawyer argued for a lighter sentence Tuesday, asking for no mo

Indian Americans to play crucial role in shaping nation's future: Bhutoria

Less than a year left before the US presidential elections, an eminent community leader and a major Democratic party fundraiser believes that Indian Americans would be playing an important role in shaping the nation's future. Ajay Bhutoria, National Finance Committee member of the Democratic National Committee, told PTI in an interview that in many of the battleground states, Indian Americans could tilt the margin of victory in the November 5, 2024 race for the White House. US SEC to impose measures to halt $130 mn fraud targeting Indian Americans

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday announced that it has obtained a temporary restraining order, asset freeze, and other emergency relief to halt an ongoing fraud targeting the Indian American community that has raised nearly USD 130 million since April 2021. Nanban Ventures LLC, its three founders Gopala Krishnan, Manivannan Shanmugam, and Sakthivel Palani Gounder, collectively known as the Founders, and three other entities that these Founders control are allegedly involved in committing the fraud, the SEC said in a press statement. Unsealed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the SEC complaint alleged that the defendants raised more than USD 89 million from more than 350 investors for investments in purported venture capital funds that the Founders managed through Nanban Ventures LLC. They also raised over USD 39 million from 10 investors which was later invested directly in the three other entities controlled by the Founders. The complaint .

US presidential candidate Ramaswamy calls for 'strategic clarity' on Taiwan

The US embraces a policy that fails to recognise Taiwan as a nation and adopts the posture of strategic ambiguity over whether or not it will defend the East Asian country against a Chinese invasion, Indian American Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has said. Beijing considers Taiwan as its breakaway province and insists it should be unified with the mainland, by force if necessary. Taiwan, however, sees itself as completely distinct from China. It is vital for US national security interest to ensure that China does not acquire sole control of the global semiconductor supply chain, Ramaswamy said in a statement on Sunday amidst increasing tension with China on the Taiwan issue. Accordingly, the US should shift from strategic ambiguity to strategic clarity: commit to affirmatively defend Taiwan against Chinese annexation until the US achieves semiconductor independence, at which point the US should resume its current posture of strategic ambiguity, he said. Last week

Want Musk to be my presidential adviser: Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy

Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian-American Republican presidential candidate, has indicated that he would like Elon Musk to be an adviser in his administration if he gets elected as the US president in 2024. Ramaswamy, 38, made these remarks on Friday at a town hall in Iowa when he was asked about whom he would want as advisers for his potential presidency, NBC News reported. Ramaswamy admires the mass layoffs Musk conducted after taking over Twitter last year. The billionaire biotech entrepreneur said in response that he wanted people with a blank fresh impression who do not come from within the government. I've enjoyed getting to know better, Elon Musk recently, I expect him to be an interesting adviser of mine because he laid off 75 per cent of the employees at Twitter, Ramaswamy was quoted as saying in the report. And then the effectiveness actually went up, he noted. A second-generation Indian-American, Ramaswamy founded Roivant Sciences in 2014 and led the largest biotech IPOs of

Several Indian-Americans among 14 charged in $52 mn Covid relief fund fraud

Around 14 people, including several Indian-origin business owners and employees have been charged in a USD 53 million fraud scheme involving a COVID-19 pandemic relief programme in the US state of Texas. This case is the largest investigated by the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC) Fraud Task Force to date, US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton said in a press release. The defendants were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday in Texas, California, and Oklahoma, the release said. Simonton said the 14 people allegedly bilked the Paycheck Protection Program, a COVID-era financial program, and numerous financial institutions out of more than USD 53 million in loan proceeds. Defrauding the government is an affront to American taxpayers. Defrauding the government during a pandemic at a time when millions of hardworking entrepreneurs struggled to make payroll and rent is pouring salt in a wound, Simonton said. Modi, Biden share light moments at dinner amid praise for Indian-Americans

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the stellar achievements of Indian-Americans in his remarks at the state dinner in which he had his high-profile guests often in laughter. Both President Joe Biden and Modi regaled their guests with some light moments while also being generous to each other, with the prime minister ending his speech with a toast to his wonderful hosts, including first lady Jill Biden, and the bond between the two countries. With Modi having a busy day attending several events, he said he had forgotten the count of speeches he made on Thursday. Apparently referring to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol who surprised guests by singing a song during a similar state dinner hosted for him in April, Modi said Biden's hospitality has moved his guests to sing, evoking laughter from the guests. He then wished that he too had the singing talent that "I could have also sung a song." Modi recalled that during a dinner hosted for him in 2014, he could not eat anything as h
