India most expensive market on forward earnings multiple

India is now the most expensive market in the world as measured by its earnings multiple for the next one year. The country's Nifty 50 companies trade at a 12-month forward price to earnings multiple of 20 times, making India the most expensive market in the world, data collated from Bloomberg shows. Benchmark indices Nifty and Sense are the top performing indices in the year to date behind only Mexico, with the Nifty 50 clocking gains of 29.3 per cent. In terms of earnings, however, India is placed at number 16 if we consider earnings for the Nifty 50 companies and below markets such as Taiwan, Singapore, France, Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and Mexico. Even if we consider a 3-year trailing period, India is number 12 behind markets such as the US, Indonesia and Thailand. Analysts widely believe that earnings growth will revive in the second half of FY18 and pick up steam in the first two quarters of FY19 as the disruptive forces of demonetisation, goods and services tax (GST) ..
