Pakistan's top leadership to decide response after Pahalgam attack

Pakistan on Thursday is holding a high powered security huddle to formulate an appropriate response to India's move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and downgrade diplomatic ties. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned the National Security Committee meeting to discuss in detail India's irresponsible actions after what Pakistan called Pahalgam false flag operation. Three services chiefs and important key ministers will attend the meeting, reported Radio Pakistan. India on Wednesday suspended the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan, including expulsion of its military attaches, in view of the cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people on Tuesday. The National Security Committee will deliberate upon internal and external situations and will review response to India's hastily taken, impulsive and impractical water measures, Radio Pakistan added. Dawn reported that deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar, while ..

No water from Sutlej, Beas rivers flows to Pak except during monsoon: Govt

India does not release water from the Sutlej and the Beas to Pakistan except in rare cases during the monsoon, the government said on Thursday. Water sharing between India and Pakistan, governed by the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, has been a point of contention for decades. Under the treaty, India has control over the Sutlej, Beas and the Ravi rivers while Pakistan manages the waters of the Indus, Jhelum and the Chenab. Water from the Sutlej and the Beas rivers only reaches Pakistan in exceptional circumstances, particularly during the monsoon season when heavy rainfall leads to increased levels in reservoirs, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary said in a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha. "No water from the Sutlej and the Beas rivers flow to Pakistan except during the monsoon season ie during floods when substantial rainfall occurs in the catchment of these rivers," he said. "Such a situation may arise in exceptional circumstances or during ...

India-Pak rift on Indus Water Treaty: WB's neutral expert backs New Delhi

A World Bank-appointed neutral expert has backed New Delhi's position on the framework to resolve certain disputes between India and Pakistan on Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects. While India has been pressing for resolution of the issues by the neutral expert as mandated under the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between the two countries, Pakistan has been backing the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague to resolve them. India and Pakistan signed IWT on September 19, 1960 after nine years of negotiations with a sole aim to manage issues relating to cross-border rivers. India welcomed the ruling by the neutral expert, International Commission of Large Dams president Michel Lino. On Monday, Lino ruled that he is competent to render a decision on the "merits of the Points of Difference" between India and Pakistan on the two hydropower projects. "India welcomes the decision given by the Neutral Expert under Paragraph 7 of Annexure F to the Indus Waters Treaty, 1960," the .

Indus Water Treaty: Pak delegation in Jammu to inspect two power projects

A Pakistani delegation arrived here on Sunday evening as part of Neutral Expert proceedings to inspect two hydroelectric power projects in Jammu and Kashmir under the Indus Water Treaty, officials said. This is the first visit by a Pakistani delegation to Jammu and Kashmir in more than five years under the dispute settlement mechanism of the 1960 Treaty. India and Pakistan signed the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) after nine years of negotiations, with the World Bank being a signatory of the pact which sets out a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange between the two sides on the use of waters of a number of cross-border rivers. A three-member Pakistan delegation inspected the Pakal Dul and Lower Kalnai hydroelectric power projects under the provisions of the IWT for the last time in January 2019, before the ties between the two countries froze following the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The officials said the visiting experts including Pakistanis wil

Indus water dispute: India, Pakistan attend two-day meeting in Vienna

India attended a two-day meeting convened by a neutral expert in Vienna that was part of proceedings aimed at resolution of a dispute between New Delhi and Islamabad on the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Senior Advocate Harish Salve was present in the capacity of India's lead counsel in the matter, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. Pakistan has replied to India on Indus Water Treaty review: Foreign Office

Pakistan has responded to a letter by India asking to start negotiations for the review of the Indus Water Treaty, the Foreign Office said on Wednesday. India earlier this year for the first time issued a notice to Pakistan, seeking a review and modification of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), in view of Islamabad's "intransigence" to comply with the dispute redressal mechanism of the pact that was signed more than six decades ago for matters relating to cross-border rivers. "I can confirm that Pakistan has responded to the Indian letter on the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan remains committed to the implementation of the Treaty in good faith and to ensure its water security," Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at the weekly briefing. "I would not like to add to media speculation. As I have said, we have responded to India. I have nothing further to add," she said when asked about the details of the Pakistani response. The India Water Treaty (IWT) signed in 1960 throug

IWT a technical matter, commissioners of both countries will talk: EAM

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a technical matter and Indus commissioners of both countries will talk to each other on this issue. Asked about India's standpoint on current developments in Pakistan and what would be the implications of India's decisions regarding the IWT, Jaishankar said it would not be appropriate for him to comment in public about the happenings in that country. "In this (Indus Water) treaty, there are commissioners from both countries (India and Pakistan). It is a technical matter and Indus commissioners will talk to each other and after that, we can see what would be the next step," said Jaishankar during an interaction with the audience in a question-answer session during the launch of 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way', in Pune. His remarks came against the backdrop of India, according to sources, issuing a notice to Pakistan for the first time, seeking a review and ...

India issues notice to Pakistan seeking modification to Indus Waters Treaty

India has issued a notice to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of September 1960 following Islamabad's "intransigence" on its implementation, government sources said on Friday. The notice was sent on January 25 through respective commissioners for Indus waters, they said. The sources said India has always been a steadfast supporter and a responsible partner in implementing the IWT in letter and spirit. "However, Pakistan's actions have adversely impinged on the provisions of IWT and their implementation, and forced India to issue an appropriate notice for modification of the pact," said a source. India and Pakistan signed the treaty in 1960 after nine years of negotiations, with the World Bank being a signatory of the pact. The treaty sets out a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange between the two countries regarding use of waters of a number of rivers. In 2015, Pakistan requested for appointment of a neutral expert to examine its technical

Indus Waters Treaty: World Bank appoints chairman of Court of Arbitration

The World Bank has appointed a "neutral expert" and a chairman of the Court of Arbitration regarding the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric power plants, in view of disagreements and differences between India and Pakistan over the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. Announcing the appointments, the World Bank said on Monday that it is confident that the highly qualified experts appointed as Neutral Expert and as members of the Court of Arbitration will engage in fair and careful consideration of their jurisdictional mandate, as they are empowered to do by the Treaty. Michel Lino has been appointed as the Neutral Expert and Sean Murphy has been appointed as Chairman of the Court of Arbitration. They will carry out their duties in their individual capacity as subject matter experts and independently of any other appointments they may currently hold, the World Bank said in a statement. There was no immediate reaction from India to the appointments. India and Pakistan signed the treaty in 1960 .
