Japan, UK and Italy to speed up joint next-generation fighter jet project

The defence ministers of Japan, the UK and Italy agreed to accelerate the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet, and announced that a trilateral government organisation would be established by the end of this year to work with the parties producing the aircraft, Japanese officials said Sunday. The three countries agreed in 2022 to jointly produce a new combat aircraft that will be ready for deployment in 2035, under the Global Combat Air Programme, or GCAP, to strengthen cooperation in the face of growing threats from China, Russia and North Korea. The next generation fighter jet would replace Japan's retiring F-2s that it jointly developed with the US and Britain's Tempest. On Sunday, Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani, after meeting with his UK and Italian counterparts, John Healey and Guido Crosetto, said a joint body called the GCAP International Government Organization, or GIGO, will be set up by the end of this year to oversee the aircraft's development. India takes part in global G7 ministers' meeting on culture in Italy

Ahead of the UN Summit of the Future, India on Saturday told a key global meeting of culture ministers in Italy that it is "incumbent upon us to advocate vociferously" for the inclusion of culture as an autonomous goal within the Pact for the Future. The summit in New York, to be held on September 22 and 23, will produce an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future with chapters on issues ranging from sustainable development and financing for development to international peace and security. An Indian delegation led by Arunish Chawla, the secretary in the Union Ministry of Culture, along with Lily Pandeya, the joint secretary in the ministry, took part in the Special Session of G7 Ministers meeting on Culture in Italy's Naples, the ministry said in a statement. In his address, Chawla emphasised recognising culture not as a "static relic of our collective past, but as a dynamic catalyst for growth", it said. He advocated that the recognition of culture as a

'Hellishly hot' southern Europe bakes under heat wave as temp tops 104F

The Italian health ministry placed 12 cities under the most severe heat warning Tuesday as a wave of hot air from Africa baked southern Europe and the Balkans and sent temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), with the worst still to come. Croatia reported the highest-ever temperatures of the Adriatic Sea, with the thermometer reaching nearly 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) at the southern walled city of Dubrovnik, the country's most popular tourism spot. In Serbia, the state power company reported record consumption Tuesday due to the use of air conditioning. Municipal authorities in several southern European and Balkan cities took measures to look after elderly people in particular as civil protection crews fielded calls for water-dropping aircraft such as Canadairs to douse wildfires that raged in southern Italy and North Macedonia. It's hellishly hot," said Carmen Daz, a tourist from Madrid who was trying to keep cool with a fan at lunchtime in ..
