Trump's gag order remains in effect after hush money conviction: NY court

A New York appeals court on Thursday denied Donald Trump's bid to end a gag order in his hush money criminal case, rejecting the Republican former president's argument that his May conviction constitutes a change in circumstances that warrants lifting the restrictions. A five-judge panel in the state's mid-level appellate court ruled that the trial judge, Juan M Merchan, was correct in extending parts of the gag order until Trump is sentenced, writing that the fair administration of justice necessarily includes sentencing. The ruling came a day after Trump's lawyers tried to file papers asking the appellate court to immediately lift the gag order. With its ruling imminent, the court rejected the filing, which called the restrictions an unconstitutional, election-interfering muzzle on Trump's free speech. In a copy of the prospective filing provided to the Associated Press, Trump's lawyers wrote that Vice President Kamala Harris' entry into the presidential race gives the matter new

India wants to play a responsible role globally, says Biden admin

Describing India as a great power which will never be a formal ally or partner of the US, the Biden administration has told lawmakers that New Delhi wants to play a responsible role globally. These remarks were made by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell during a hearing on US-China Competitiveness Beyond the Indo-Pacific on Tuesday, amidst indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Kyiv later this month against the backdrop of renewed global efforts to end Russia's war on Ukraine. One of the hardest things to keep in mind is that India is also a great power. It has its own beliefs and its own interests. They will never be a formal ally or partner of the United States. But it doesn't mean that we cannot have the strongest of possible relationships as allied nations on the global stage, Kurt told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the hearing. He was responding to a question from Senator James Risch about the recent Moscow visit of Prime Ministe

Radical left Democratic Party bosses installed Kamala as puppet: Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has alleged that the left Democratic Party bosses have installed Kamala Harris as a "puppet candidate" who is "totally scripted, owned, and controlled" by the donors and the power brokers. The former president's remarks came at an election rally in Pennsylvania, a state where he escaped an assassination attempt on July 13. The radical left Democrat party bosses have installed a puppet candidate to fight only for themselves. Kamala Harris got zero votes. She's totally scripted, owned, and controlled by the donors and the power brokers who created her campaign and who rip off our government and make billions and billions of dollars, Trump, 78, said. Trump has intensified his attacks on Harris as the race for the November 5 presidential election gained momentum with opinion polls showing that the Vice President has narrowed the gap with her Republican rival. Trump accused Harris, 59, of lying about 81-year-old Joe Biden's mental and physi

About 8 in 10 Democrats satisfied with Harris after Biden's exit: Poll

Vice President Kamala Harris appears to have energized Democrats in the early days of her candidacy, with the surge in warm feelings extending across multiple groups, including some key Democratic constituencies that had been especially tepid about President Joe Biden, a new poll shows. About 8 in 10 Democrats say they would be somewhat or very satisfied if Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which was conducted after Biden withdrew from the race. In a separate AP-NORC poll, taken before Biden dropped out but after his debate against former President Donald Trump, only about 4 in 10 Democrats said they were somewhat or very satisfied that he was the Democratic Party's likely nominee for president. The rapidly changing views among Democrats in such a short time span underscore how swiftly the party from rank-and-file voters to elected officials has coalesced behind Harris as i

'If you got something to say say it to my face': Harris as she slams Trump

US Vice President and Democratic Party's presumptive presidential candidate Kamala Harris has challenged her Republican rival, former president Donald Trump, for a debate, provoking him to say whatever he has to say to her face. Addressing an election rally in the state of Georgia's Atlanta city on Tuesday, Harris, 59, said that the nature of presidential elections changed after she entered the race. She officially declared her candidacy after incumbent President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for a second term on July 20. The momentum in this race is shifting. There are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it. You may have noticed. So last week, you may have seen, he pulled out of the debate in September he had previously agreed to, Harris said. Well Donald, I do hope you'll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage because as the saying goes, if you got something to say, say it to my face, she said to a cheering crowd. So, here's the funny thing about that. Here's the funny thin

Biden slams US SC for prez immunity decision, says court mired in crisis

President Joe Biden has said the US Supreme Court is mired in a "crisis of ethics", slamming its recent decisions on presidential immunity, as he raised serious questions on the integrity and independence of the American judiciary system. Biden, 81, harshly criticised the apex court on Monday while delivering remarks at the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. On top of its extreme decisions, the court is mired in a crisis of ethics, Biden said. He said the Supreme Court "most recently and most shockingly established a "dangerous precedent" in the former president Donald Trump versus the United States case. They ruled, as you know, that the president of the United States has immunity for potential crimes he may have committed while in office, immunity, he said. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution. It prolonged the delay in the criminal case agains

Biden calls out Trump, recalls how civil rights led him into politics

No longer on the campaign trail, President Joe Biden on Monday delivered a speech at the LBJ Presidential Library designed to help cement his legacy. Slightly more than a week after dropping out of this year's election, Biden marked the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act by speaking out for the rule of law and democratic principles. All the while, he warned about the threat he sees if Republican Donald Trump returns to the White House. No one is above the law, Biden said. Biden followed his denunciations of Trump with a mix of nostalgia for his early days in politics during the era of Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson. It's a story he's told before, about how he became a public defender and was cornered by Delaware leaders to run for the US Senate. But it's taken on a new resonance as he stares down the final six months of his political career. Because I got engaged like a lot of you do ... you get engaged and you want to change things, he ...

President Joe Biden calls for Supreme Court term limits, ethics rules

President Joe Biden has unveiled a long-awaited proposal for changes at the US Supreme Court, calling on Congress to establish term limits and an enforceable ethics code for the court's nine justices. He's also pressing lawmakers to ratify a constitutional amendment limiting presidential immunity. The White House on Monday detailed the contours of Biden's court proposal, one that appears to have little chance of being approved by a closely divided Congress with just 99 days to go before Election Day. Still, Democrats hope it'll help focus voters as they consider their choices in a tight election. The likely Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, who has sought to frame her race against Republican ex-President Donald Trump as "a choice between freedom and chaos," said the court's fairness had been called into question following recent decisions. The White House is looking to tap into the growing outrage among Democrats about the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority

Harris addresses herself an underdog, touts her campaign as people powered

Kamala Harris, the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic party, has called herself the underdog in the race to the White House but expressed confidence that she would win in November due to her people-powered campaign. In her first fundraiser since becoming her party's candidate for president, Harris told supporters that this year's election was a choice between two visions for the country one looking toward the future and one that wants to undo the country's progress. "We are the underdogs in this race. Level set, ok. We are the underdogs in this race, but this is a people-powered campaign," Vice President Harris said, addressing a group of 800 fundraisers in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. "This is a people-powered campaign and we have momentum," Harris, 59 said. During the fundraiser on Saturday, she raised USD 1.4 million as against the original goal of USD 400,000. Amidst loud applause from the audience, she said that her campaign has "earned the support of enough ..

Trump claims Biden's exit from 2024 presidential race was a 'coup'

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said incumbent US President Joe Biden was forced to exit the presidential race, describing it a "coup" by the Democratic Party. The former president's remarks came during an election rally in Minnesota on Saturday. This was really a coup of and by the Democrats. This was a coup of a man that had 14 million votes. He wanted to run. They wouldn't let him run. They treated him horribly. They said to him, we can do it the nice way, or we can do it the hard way. To Joe, he's president, Trump claimed. This was a coup with the presidency, he said. "They threatened him with the 25th Amendment. They said, Joe, we're going to threaten you with the 25th Amendment. You're cognitively and physically a mess. And if you don't get out, we're going to take you out with the 25th Amendment, Trump, 78, alleged.
