Mehbooba to J&K youth: Work toward establishing a progressive society
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asked the youth to work toward establishing a progressive society and help put the state on the fast track to development, growth and progress. Speaking to a delegation of youth here, the chief minister said they held a promise for the state in terms of forging new bonds of amity, equality and brotherhood. She said the younger generation was better equipped to defeat negative perceptions about regions, communities and groups which, she said, were based on ignorance, lack of information and education. Mufti asked the youth to rise above the distinctions of caste, creed, colour and region, and work for the development of the state. No 'nokkukooli' in Kerala from May 1
In an investment friendly move, central trade unions in Kerala has endorsed the CPI(M) led LDF government's decision to end 'nokkukooli', under which money paid to workers without rendering any service. 'Nokkukooli' is widely considered as a product of militant trade unionism that had resulted in frequent altercations between workers and business people. A decision to end the decades old practise of loaders taking money without rendering any service would come into affect from May 1, the labourers day. Trade unions extended support to the government proposal at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here yesterday. In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister said District Collectors would convene a meeting of trade unions to finalise the operation of the decision. Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda on Thursday filed his nomination papers as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh.Nadda is seeking re-nomination to the Upper House from his home state.There will be 59 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha in April, including 17 from the BJP and 12 from the Congress party. France to 'name and shame' companies that pay women less
French President Emmanuel Macron today marked International Women's Day with a pledge to "name and shame" companies that pay women less than men for the same work. On a visit to a Paris-based property management firm hailed as a model of gender equality, he announced plans to "drastically" increase inspections of companies to ensure they complied with a law requiring equal pay for equal work. "We will put in place a 'name and shame' system to make public (the names of) companies that least respect the law," said Macron, who has made tackling sexism a key priority. "No one wants to be bottom of the class on this issue," he said. The World Economic Forum last year ranked France 11th out of 144 countries for gender equality but a dismal 129th for wage equality for similar work. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced plans to get tough on companies that pay women less. Under a package of workplace reforms to be finalised next month, wage screening software will be rolled .

Male readers of left-wing French daily Liberation were asked to pay 25 per cent more for their paper on today, to underscore the gender pay gap on International Women's Day. The paper published two versions with different cover pages, one marked "for women, 2 euros, normal price" with a pictogram of a woman, the other marked "for men, 2.50 euros" with a pictogram of a man. In a front-page message the paper noted that despite equal pay for equal work being enshrined by law since 1972, French women earn on average 25.7 per cent less than men, according to a 2017 report from an inequality watchdog. "To highlight this injustice Liberation has decided to apply the same difference to its sale price for a day, meaning 50 cents more for men," it said, adding that profits from the operation would be donated to France's non-governmental Equality Observatory. Punjab explores possibility of collaboration with job portal
The Punjab government today said it is exploring the possibility of collaboration with job portal Naukri.com to provide a platform for job seekers to find employment opportunities. This was disclosed here by an official spokesperson in a release after a meeting between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Naukri.com promoter Hitesh Oberoi on the sidelines of TiECon 2018. The spokesperson said the government was also looking at tie-ups with other such job portals to facilitate the fulfilment of its manifesto promise of 'Ghar Ghar Naukri' by creating employment generation avenues for unemployed youth. AAP workers stage 'dharna' against Faridkot ADC
A large number of AAP workers today staged a sit-in in Faridkot against Additional Deputy Commissioner Keshav Hingonia, a day after the ADC and an Aam Aadmi Party legislator were involved in a verbal spat. AAP state unit co-president Aman Arora accused Hingonia of disrespecting Kotkapura MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan, and said the party would raise the issue in the budget session of the Punjab Assembly, set to begin on March 20. Arora said the AAP legislator only wanted to submit a memorandum to the ADC, but he allegedly misbehaved with him. "An MLA is an elected representative of the people and must be respected," he said. Sandhwan and Hingonia were involved in a verbal spat in the district yesterday, with the legislator accusing the officer of misbehaviour, but the ADC has denied the charge. CAT says DD News not serious about complying with its order
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has said that the Centre, the Prasar Bharati and DD News are "not serious" about complying with its directions to consider the grievances of contractual employees demanding salary and others benefits at par with regular staffers. The principal bench of the tribunal, headed by its chairman Justice Permod Kohli, has issued notice to the authorities concerned to decide on various representations of contractual employees and posted the matter for further hearing on March 8. The tribunal was hearing a plea by 75 contractual employees of DD News, alleging they have been "discriminated and humiliated" when compared to regular employees of the channel. The doctrine of 'equal pay for equal work' was not being followed, they said. The principal bench of CAT had on May 19 last year asked the authorities to decide on the representations of contractual employees within 90 days. Over 93L unorganised workers benefitting from WB govt schemes
There are more than 93 lakh workers in the unorganised sector of West Bengal and they have been enrolled under the state government's social security scheme, Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak said in the Assembly today. The government will ensure that all workers of the unorganized sector enjoy equal benefits under the scheme, he said. The workers are entitled to pension and cash relief in case of death, the minister said, while placing a demand for a budgetary grant of Rs 939.18 crore for his department in fiscal 2018-19. The demand was passed by the legislators through a voice vote. "At present the labour department runs 14 ESI hospitals in various parts of the state and two more 100-bed facilities will be coming up soon at Haldia and Siliguri," he said. A group of secretaries had recommended an online platform, with the objective of integrating all the government employees on a "hiring to retiring" pattern, Parliament was informed today. Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh informed this in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. He said the Group of Secretaries on Governance had recommended a single online platform to integrate all employees from "hiring to retiring" for a transparent and accountable governance. The other recommendations of the group included a platform for massive open online courses for building capacity of all the government functionaries and to bring up a comprehensive development role manual for the functionaries at the district and block level, Singh said.
