Ray of hope for jobless Gitanjali Group employees

Union Labour ministry will examine the situation of Gitanjali Group employees who have been rendered jobless after shutdown of companies, on the backdrop of the Punjab National Bank scam.On being asked whether these employees will be covered in the new Wage Code Bill that is likely to be tabled in this Budget Session, Labour Secretary M Sathiyavathy told ANI, "Scam-hit companies are not covered in the new wage bill, I don't think wage code has any provision for that."Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi were implicated in the multi-crore scam that hit the PNB.Top officials of the bank, as well as the companies owned by Modi and Choksi were arrested in this connection.On Tuesday, Vipul Chitalia, the vice-president (banking operations) of Gitanjali Group was also arrested.

Ramco Systems bags order from PORR Qatar Construction

Human resources and payroll software provider Ramco Systems has bagged an order from PORR Qatar Construction WLL, part of European construction major PORR Group. The PORR Group, for its Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) operation, would implement Ramco HCM's complete suite, including core HR, time and attendance, employee benefits, payroll and talent management, city-based Ramco Systems said in a statement. PORR has been present in Qatar since 2011 and has been involved in infrastructure projects -- including construction of Doha Metro, Al Wakrah Stadium. Mallya's superyacht confiscated over wage dispute

Anganwadi workers stir: Khattar takes veiled dig at CITU

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today slammed those who were allegedly trying to make political capital out of the protests of Anganwadi workers and took a veiled dig at CITU, CPI(M)- affiliated trade union, saying their attempts to create "trouble" in the state will not be allowed. Chinese firms to pay USD 14 million back wages in Saipan

Four China-based construction firms will pay nearly USD 14 million in back wages and damages to thousands of Chinese workers for construction of a casino in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Investigators found the contractors paid employees less than what was required by law, according to a US Department of Labor statement released Monday. The settlement by the companies will affect more than 2,400 employees. US officials say workers entered on tourist visas and without proper visa authorisation. They were also forced to incur debt of thousands of dollars for airfare and recruitment fees prior to their employment in Saipan, according to the settlement. "These settlements ensure that thousands of workers will receive the wages they legally earned, while simultaneously sending a strong, clear message to other employers," said Bryan Jarrett, the Labour Department's Wage and Hour Acting Administrator in a statement. Tata Motors to have 25% women workforce in 4-5 yrs

Countrys largest auto-maker Tata Motors is turning more women-friendly, and hopes to have a quarter of its total workforce as women over the next four to five years. It can be noted that Tata Motors's Pune plant was the first manufacturing plant in the country to have a female engineer on its assembly line way back in April 1974 when the late JRD Tata had personally hired Sudha Murthy, the wife of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy. "We have substantially increased the number of women in our workforce over the last four-five years and we aim to increase it to 20-25 per cent over the next four to five years," Gajendra Chandel, chief HR officer at Tata Motors told PTI today. US delays decision on work authorisation of spouses of H-1B visa holders

The Trump administration has delayed its decision on termination of work authorisation for spouses of the H-1B visa holders, in a big relief to a significantly large number of Indian workers and their families. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a court submission this week said that it would not take a decision on terminating the work authorisation of H4 visa users, spouses of H-1B visa holders, till June as it needs time to review the economic impact of such a decision. Since 2015, the spouses of H-1B, or high-skilled, visa holders waiting for green cards have been eligible to work in the US on H-4 dependent visas, under a rule introduced by the previous Obama administration. The DHS was previously scheduled to take a call on it by February 28. Wages of Anganwari workers in Haryana increased

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today announced to link wages of Anganwari workers with wholesale price index which will regularly increase their wages in future, an official release said. Following this, Anganwari workers announced to call-off their strike. They have been demanding minimum wages of Rs 18,000 per month. The chief minister also announced to categorise services of Anganawari workers into semi-skilled and skilled.
