German union accepts ThyssenKrupp-Tata guarantees

German workers approved today their union's results in talks with India's Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp's steel division ahead of a planned merger -- but the vote does not remove all obstacles to the tie-up. Some 92.2 per cent of IG Metall members polled agreed to executives' guarantee not to slash jobs or close major sites until at least September 2026 if the fusion succeeds, the union said in a statement. "We managed to clear up important points in favour of the employees," said Detlef Wetzel, who sits on ThyssenKrupp Steel's supervisory board as a worker representative. Nevertheless, workers' acceptance of the guarantees does not mean the deal can immediately go ahead. "Only the supervisory board can decide that, and it's far from certain whether worker representatives will agree," Wetzel continued. IG Metall has commissioned expert studies on whether the merged companies would be economically viable, it said. ThyssenKrupp and Tata's tie-up would create a firm with ...

HC frowns over TN G.O. allowing govt employees to work abroad

The Madras High Court today took a serious view of a 1991 Tamil Nadu government order permitting its employees to work in private companies outside India after securing leave, and posed questions on the validity of the order. A bench comprising justices N. Kirubakaran and R. Tharani directed the government to state how many employees had used the G.O. No.196 of May 20, 1991 to go abroad and how many had rejoined after returning. The court was hearing an appeal by the government against the order of a single judge directing it to consider the representation of a deputy tahsildar for a notional promotion as deputy collector after working abroad for three years. The bench wondered on what basis such a G.O was issued. "When there was unemployment problem in this country, how can the government allow an employee to leave the country for three years. When an employee is abroad, would it not affect the local administrative job. "The post will remain vacant for so many years and .

US adds 200,000 new jobs in January

US job creation accelerated in January, as labour markets continued to absorb workers at a robust pace, unemployment clung to a record low and wages moved higher, the government reported today. The world's largest economy added 200,000 net new positions in the month, more than expected, driven by gains in construction, retail, restaurants and health care, the Labour Department reported. The result beat forecasts, which predicted an increase of 180,000, and helped offset December's disappointing result. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate remained at 4.1 per cent for the fourth month in a row. Hourly wages continued to rise for the month as labour markets remained tight -- with wages posting their largest 12 -month increase in more than nine years. That will strengthen the case for the Federal Reserve to raise the benchmark interest rate in March, as it is widely expected to do. Hourly wages rose 0.3 per cent from the prior month to USD 26.74, putting worker pay up 2.9 per ...
