Rahul slams Modi over shrinking workforce report; says he is 'joke'

In a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over reports of shrinking workforce, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said his policies have "destroyed" one crore jobs last year and that "India's PM is a joke". Gandhi's criticism of Modi came after an English daily quoted a government labour document to claim that the "actual size of India's male workforce, or men who are working, has shrunk for the first time since 1993-94". "I thought India was producing 450 jobs a day. Turns out Modi's policies destroyed 1 crore jobs in 2018. That's 27,000 jobs lost every single day of 2018. India's PM is a joke," he tweeted. However, the Congress chief did not elaborate how he reached at the 1 crore figure. At a rally in Manipur, Rahul Gandhi said the Prime Minister had made a promise of providing two crore jobs every year but one crore jobs were lost in 2018 alone. "This is the scale of his incompetence. It is absurd and ridiculous that the PM promises giving two crore jobs," he

"I am not using my data, I am giving Nasscom data," he said. Confronting the Opposition over the jobs crisis barb, the minister challenged the Congress to show just how many jobs had been generated in their tenure. "One can talk on facts but not on falsehoods, and if the Congress party is so keen, can they show their ...

Alan Krueger, noted economist who served Obama, has died

Alan Krueger, a groundbreaking Princeton University economist who served as a top adviser in two Democratic administrations and was an authority on the labor market, has died, according to a statement from the university. Princeton did not disclose the cause of death. Krueger, 58, devoted much of his research to the job market and, in particular, to the impact of a minimum wage. His work concluded that a higher minimum wage did not generally slow hiring as many conservative critics have argued. After serving as a Labor Department economist under President Bill Clinton, Krueger worked for President Barack Obama as a top Treasury official and then as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2011 to 2013. Cecilia Rouse, dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School for Public Policy and International Affairs, said she first met Krueger during the 1980s when she was a student at Harvard University and he was a graduate student there. Even if critical, govt must make employment data available: Kaushik Basu

Noted economist Kaushik Basu Saturday urged the government to make available "employment data" even if it is "critical" so that corrective action could be taken. He also raised concerns over "unmistakable signs" of India's economy "slowing down over the last few years". "Given that India has a remarkable global reputation (on statistical data), we don't want that to be damaged. Actually, in general, data is fine but it is the employment data that we have to work harder on and make available, even when it is critical," Basu said. Basu, former chief economic adviser to the Manmohan Singh government, was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 54th convocation of Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad. The former chief economist of the World Bank said the data will help us "see what's happening and then take corrective action".
