Provident Fund deduction related litigations with the EPFO is likely to reduce after the Supreme Court ruling that special allowance paid by an employer is part of basic wages for EPF dues computation. The apex court in its judgement has ruled that special allowance is part of the basic wages for computing the employees provident fund (EPF). The employer as well as the employee pay 12 per cent of basic wages each towards contribution for social security scheme run by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). "The order just upheld the existing sections of the EPF Act. After this ruling, it is expected that litigations related to deductions toward provident fund will be reduced," RPFC Navendu Rai said on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the ICC on the EPF Act. In January this year, the state government had raised the wages for new joinees to Rs 327 a day as interim relief. A worker is also entitled to get Rs 385 a day if his attendance is at least 24 days in a month, failing which the wage would be reduced to Rs 370 a day. "This is a good wage agreement. Our government has given a better deal to the workers compared to the previous Left Front regime," Ghatak said. The government has released pending dues of Rs 171 crore to cash-strapped MTNL for paying February salaries to employees, a senior official said. On the other hand, BSNL will clear salary dues of around Rs 850 crore by March 20 from its internal accruals. Both companies have failed to pay salaries of their employees for last month, according to employees' representatives. BSNL Chairman and MD Anupam Shrivastava said the company expects internal accruals of around Rs 850 crore in this month and the entire amount will be used for disbursal of salaries. "There will be no pending amount following this disbursal," he said. The company has informed its employee representatives that the disbursal of salaries would be made by March 20. BSNL spokesperson Sanjay Kumar Sinha said the salaries of BSNL employees in Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and BSNL Corporate office (excluding senior officers and board members) have already been released. The Odisha government Tuesday urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take immediate steps to rescue 42 labourers from the state who are allegedly trapped and being tortured by their employers in Dubai, officials said. Responding to media reports, the state's home department urged the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Protector General of Emigrants (PGE) to make immediate arrangements to bring the trapped labourers back to the country. The PGE, under the Ministry of External Affairs, is the authority responsible for protecting the interest of Indian workers abroad. According to media reports about 40 labourers from Khallikote area of Ganjam district have allegedly been tortured by their employers, a construction company in Dubai. The labourers recently called up their families and told them about their plight following which the district authorities were informed. Budget carrier IndiGo is offering jobs to pilots of Jet Airways along with compensation for overdue salaries from the cash-strapped full service airline. IndiGo, the country's largest airline in terms of market share, Tuesday also said that all job offers are in line with its current terms and conditions. Crisis-hit Jet Airways has not paid salaries to its pilots, engineers and other senior management for more than three months now. "IndiGo is offering Jet Airways' pilots job opportunities," an IndiGo spokesperson told PTI. The no-frills airline's response came to queries on whether it was looking to hire pilots from Jet Airways and also offering them significant amount as joining bonuses. The queries were sent to IndiGo's Chief Operating Officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer. "We are not offering a signing bonus. We are offering a compensation for overdue salaries," the spokesperson said. Stipends paid to apprentices are higher than minimum wages doled out across many sectors, according to a report. Vadodara-based TeamLease Skills University said the growing demand for skilled talent coupled with revisions in the Apprentice Act seems to be positively impacting the apprenticeship eco-system. "The median stipend is around 41 per cent higher than the applicable minimum wages in majority of the sectors and cities," it said. The findings are based on an analysis of data pertaining to more than two lakh apprentices. "With a stipend that is 159 per cent higher than the minimum wages, Maharashtra topped the list as the highest paying state. "Amongst sectors Construction & Real Estate (125 per cent), IT & ITeS (122 per cent), FMCG (110 per cent) and Automotive (82 per cent) were the top paying sector for apprentices," the report said. City-based skill development and training institute Sona Yukti has been given the social enterprise network (SEN) sustainability award for education. The award was presented by Young Presidents Organisation to CEO of Sona Yukti Chockalingam Valliappa at its annual event held in Cape Town, South Africa, last week, a press release from the institute here said.
